West Ham United captain Jarrod Bowen has found himself at the centre of a major post-match storm after responding to former Hammers midfielder Kevin Nolan following the club’s narrow 1-0 Premier League defeat to Arsenal at the London Stadium.

The game looked destined to end in a frustrating draw for both sides after a tense and scrappy contest saw very few clear-cut opportunities in the opening 80 minutes. Leandro Trossard eventually broke West Ham hearts in the 83rd minute, finishing calmly to hand Mikel Arteta’s side a massive three points in their title chase.

But while Arsenal celebrated a crucial victory, much of the attention after full-time shifted toward comments made by Nolan during his live television punditry appearance at half-time.

The former West Ham star did not hold back in his assessment of his old side’s first-half display. Speaking during the break, Nolan questioned the team’s mentality and accused them of approaching the game with the wrong mindset.

He said:

“I don’t think West Ham’s players have the mentality of winning this game right now. From the way they’ve played in that first half, it looks like they came here hoping for a draw and I don’t think they’re going to get that if they continue like this.”

The comments immediately sparked debate online, with many supporters stunned by how brutally honest Nolan was about the club he once represented.

Some fans agreed with his analysis, arguing West Ham looked passive throughout the first half.

Despite their improvement, Trossard’s late winner silenced the stadium and ensured Arsenal left with all three points.

After full-time, Bowen was interviewed and informed about Nolan’s controversial half-time remarks.

The West Ham captain appeared surprised before offering a calm but pointed response.

Bowen said:

“That’s his opinion and he’s entitled to it, but inside that dressing room we believed we could win the game.”

He continued:

“We knew Arsenal would dominate spells because of the quality they have, but to say we didn’t have the mentality to win isn’t something I agree with.”

The captain then defended his teammates further.

“We gave everything in the second half and unfortunately we got punished late on. That happens against top teams.”

“People watching from outside can say what they want, but the players know what we were trying to do.”

His response quickly went viral online, with many praising him for defending his teammates without creating further controversy.
