Ian Wright unimpressed by £30m Arsenal player during Arsenal’s draw with Brighton today

Arsenal have handed an early advantage to Manchester City in the title race by dropping points at home to Brighton this afternoon.

The Gunners had got themselves in the lead through Kai Havertz and looked in control of the game despite Brighton looking sharp.

However, a red card for Declan Rice changed the outlook of the game.

The England man was sent off for a petulant second yellow and while Ally McCoist was shocked by the red card, it was the right decision

More worrying for Arsenal than the Rice red was the below par performances of a few of their key men.

And after a bit of a slow first half, even Arsenal loving pundit Ian Wright admitted performances were not great.

Watching the game for Premier League Productions, Gunners legend Wright passed comment on the opening 45 minutes and admitted that he wasn’t overly impressed by Odegaard.

“The way they’ve started, the closing down of Arsenal has been very good. I think Martin Odegaard has been a little bit off with his play at the minute,” Wright said.

“But in respect to the way Arsenal have been playing, it’s exactly what I expected.”

Tackle on Odegaard took its toll

There was a moment in the first half when Martin Odegaard was caught by Yankuba Minteh and he just never seemed to recover.

£30m signing Odegaard was not the only Arsenal player to look a bit sub-par today in fairness as a number of others struggled.

Leandro Trossard was poor against this old team, while Bukayo Saka started well but faded as the game went on.

Arsenal need more over the season and the red card for Rice has cost them here.

Odegaard effectively going missing when his team needed him most is quite concerning and Mikel Arteta has some food for thought already.
