Arsenal legend Ian Wright was full of praise following the club’s 1-0 victory over Tottenham in Sunday’s North London Derby. Despite missing key players Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard, the Gunners secured all three points in what was a standout defensive performance.
Arsenal’s triumph at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium highlighted the resilience and depth of Mikel Arteta’s squad, particularly in defence.
The match saw Arsenal’s backline rise to the occasion, with Wright singling out Gabriel Magalhães for special praise. “Massive goal, fantastic performance from him,” Wright said, commending the Brazilian defender’s key role in the win.
Gabriel has become a crucial figure in maintaining the team’s defensive solidity, even as midfield leaders Rice and Ødegaard were absent.
Wright’s admiration wasn’t limited to Gabriel, as he also acknowledged the efforts of Jurrien Timber, William Saliba, and Ben White. While White’s performance may not have stood out as much as his counterparts, the defensive unit as a whole delivered a trophy-worthy display. “Jurrien Timber was fantastic, same with Saliba. I thought Tottenham almost played into their hands a bit,” Wright added.
Jurrien Timber, in particular, impressed with his command on the left side. The Dutch defender has been a consistent performer for Arsenal this season, starting three of the club’s first four Premier League games. Against Spurs, Timber effectively nullified Tottenham’s Brennan Johnson, leading to the forward’s substitution.
Though Arsenal’s attack was not at its peak, with Gabriel Martinelli struggling offensively, the team’s defensive prowess more than compensated. Martinelli’s tireless defensive work ahead of Timber further demonstrated Arsenal’s collective effort.
