Oxford United Hero Returns Home as Club Legend Begins Emotional New Chapter – Fans Delighted
Oxford United supporters have welcomed the return of one of the club’s modern-day heroes after Matty Taylor officially rejoined the U’s in a coaching role, marking the beginning of an emotional new chapter at the club where he enjoyed some of the finest years of his career.
The Kidlington-born former striker has returned to Oxford United’s academy setup as an Academy Striker Coach, where he will work with the club’s young forwards, helping to develop the next generation of goalscorers.
A Homecoming That Feels Right
Taylor’s connection with Oxford United runs far deeper than football. Having come through the club’s youth system before later returning as a senior player, he became one of the most respected and popular figures among the Kassam Stadium faithful.
Across his two spells with the U’s, Taylor scored 64 competitive goals, placing him among the club’s leading goalscorers of the modern era. His second spell, which began in January 2020, proved particularly successful as he found the net 41 times in 112 appearances, playing a key role in Oxford’s promotion push and becoming a fans’ favourite thanks to his intelligent movement, relentless work ethic and eye for goal.
Following his departure in 2023, Taylor continued his playing career before taking the next step into coaching.
Now, at the age of 35, he has returned to the club where his journey began, this time with the responsibility of helping young attacking players fulfil their own potential.
Taylor: “Hopefully I Can Help the Next Generation”
Speaking after his appointment was confirmed, Taylor expressed his excitement about returning home.
“I’ve been in their shoes and experienced so much throughout my career. If I can pass some of that knowledge on and help these young players improve, then that’s incredibly rewarding.”
Having experienced the highs and lows of professional football across the Premier League, Championship, League One and League Two, Taylor brings a wealth of experience that Oxford believe will prove invaluable for the club’s academy prospects.
Building for the Future
Taylor’s appointment reflects Oxford United’s continued commitment to strengthening the pathway between the academy and the first team following the club’s return to the Championship.
His experience as a proven goalscorer, combined with his understanding of the club’s culture and expectations, makes him an ideal mentor for the academy’s young strikers as they look to follow in his footsteps.
Fans Welcome a Familiar Face Back to the Kassam
News of Taylor’s return has been warmly received by supporters, many of whom still regard him as one of Oxford United’s most influential forwards of the past decade.
For fans, seeing one of their own back at the club is about far more than a coaching appointment. It represents continuity, identity and a connection between the club’s proud past and its ambitious future.
Matty Taylor may no longer be leading the line on Saturday afternoons, but his impact at Oxford United is far from over. This time, his mission is to inspire the next generation—and few people are better placed to do exactly that.
