Coventry and Ipswich racing to sign World Cup star who’s won four league titles
Coventry City and Ipswich Town are both stepping up their search for midfield reinforcements as they prepare for the challenges of the upcoming Premier League season.
Coventry have already strengthened their midfield by completing the permanent signing of Frank Onyeka from Brentford. After sealing the move, the Nigerian international expressed his excitement and outlined his ambitions for the campaign.
Onyeka revealed that his original objective when he joined on loan was to help Coventry secure promotion, a goal the club successfully achieved.
Onyeka said: “When I first joined last season, I came here with two goals: to win the Championship and help Coventry get promoted to the Premier League. I’m really happy to now be a Coventry player back in the Premier League.
“I will give everything to the team, fight for every ball, fight for my team-mates and bring my experience.
“My ambition now is to help the team stay in the Premier League and finish as high as we can.”
Now officially a Sky Blues player, he has pledged to give everything on the pitch, fight for every challenge, support his teammates with his experience, and help Coventry establish themselves in the Premier League while finishing as high up the table as possible.
Ipswich Town are also looking to bolster their squad after suffering relegation from the Premier League following a difficult 2024-25 campaign. The Tractor Boys have already shown their intent in the transfer market by signing striker Emersonn from Toulouse and are now targeting further additions.
Coventry and Ipswich monitoring Patrick Berg
According to reports from TEAMtalk, both Coventry and Ipswich have joined the race to sign Bodo/Glimt midfielder Patrick Berg, who is believed to be open to leaving the Norwegian champions this summer.
The Championship newcomers are not alone in their pursuit, however, with Hull City, Burnley and West Ham United also credited with interest. Berg reportedly feels that English football would suit his style of play, believing his physical approach is well-matched to the demands of both the Premier League and Championship.
Why Berg is attracting Premier League interest
The experienced midfielder could prove to be an excellent addition for either Coventry or Ipswich. Having featured in 12 UEFA Champions League matches last season, Berg brings valuable experience of competing at the highest level of European football.
Although no transfer fee has been disclosed, Bodo/Glimt signed the Norwegian international from Lens for around €4.5 million (£3.8 million) in 2022, providing an indication of his potential valuation.
A complete midfield presence
While Berg has spent much of his career operating as a defensive midfielder, he also offers a significant attacking threat. During the 2025 Eliteserien campaign, the 28-year-old scored five goals and supplied 12 assists in just 28 appearances, highlighting his ability to influence games at both ends of the pitch.
His international pedigree also strengthens his appeal. Berg has earned 49 caps for Norway, including six appearances at the World Cup, where Norway reached the quarter-finals before being eliminated by England.
Ready for the Premier League?
Berg further enhanced his reputation with a series of impressive displays during the World Cup, particularly against Brazil. In that match, he registered three tackles, won seven of his eight duels, completed 93% of his passes, and contributed two assists across the tournament.
Those performances suggest he possesses the technical quality, defensive discipline and composure needed to thrive in English football. With four Norwegian league titles already on his résumé, Berg could become a key figure for either Coventry City or Ipswich Town as both clubs fight to secure Premier League survival.
