Sandro Tonali endured a nightmare return against Newcastle United as Tottenham Hotspur suffered a frustrating 2-0 defeat at home, with the midfielder appearing to respond angrily to the travelling supporters during a heated moment late in the game.

Tonali completed a high-profile move to Tottenham during the summer after leaving Newcastle, making Saturday’s meeting at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium particularly significant for the Italian midfielder.

However, what should have been an emotional reunion quickly turned uncomfortable for the 26-year-old.

The Newcastle supporters made their feelings known throughout the match, repeatedly jeering Tonali whenever he received possession. The midfielder struggled to impose himself on the game as Tottenham ultimately collapsed in the second half.

Newcastle took control after the break and eventually found the breakthrough through Anthony Elanga. The Swedish forward produced an excellent finish after a superb move involving Newcastle debutant Nico González and Amar Dedić.

Things became even worse for Tottenham shortly afterwards when Yoane Wissa doubled Newcastle’s advantage with an audacious finish, leaving the home supporters frustrated and the visiting fans celebrating wildly.

Tonali was eventually substituted in the second half, and his departure produced another loud reaction from the Newcastle end.

As he made his way towards the touchline, the former Newcastle midfielder appeared visibly frustrated by the taunts coming from his former supporters. He gestured angrily towards the away section, creating a tense moment that quickly attracted attention online.

Footage of the incident began circulating across social media almost immediately, with supporters offering very different opinions about Tonali’s reaction.

Some Newcastle fans saw the incident as another sign of the emotional tension surrounding his departure, while others argued that the midfielder was simply reacting to what had been a hostile reception from the travelling support.

For Tonali, however, the afternoon could hardly have gone worse.

Tottenham had entered the match desperate for a positive response after their disappointing opening-day defeat to Brentford, but another defeat leaves Roberto De Zerbi with plenty of questions to answer.

The Italian manager admitted afterwards that his biggest challenge is developing the right mentality within his new-look squad, particularly after another disappointing performance when Tottenham needed a response.

Meanwhile, Newcastle will leave North London delighted with the result.

Despite losing several important figures during the summer, including Tonali, Eddie Howe and other key players, Matthias Jaissle’s side produced an impressive away performance and showed that they may be capable of competing strongly despite the major changes to the squad.

For Tonali, though, his first meeting with his former club will be remembered for all the wrong reasons — a defeat, a difficult individual performance and a fiery exchange with the Newcastle supporters that has quickly become one of the biggest talking points from the match.
