Nathan Judah thinks Goncalo Guedes is ‘done’ at Wolves
Goncalo Guedes made a rare start for Wolves against Brighton, coming into the side in place of Jean-Ricner Bellegarde.
This was the first time the Portuguese forward had featured in a starting lineup since February, seeing his involvement restricted to just substitute appearances.
But on a day when he could have staked his claim for a regular spot in the side, Wolves lost 2-0 against Brighton, and Guedes failed to take his chance.
It was a disappointing afternoon for the 28-year-old, who blew his rare opportunity to shine, and now expert Nathan Judah thinks his time at Molineux is ‘done’.
“Goncalo Guedes got the nod to start Liam and obviously barring those first 10 to 15 minutes was pretty ineffective and got pulled before 60 minutes,” Judah said on the Express & Star podcast.
“I understand there’s going to be a lot of turnover, I understand that Guedes has two years left on his current deal. But we’ve obviously been very critical of Goncalo Guedes and rightly so, I know during his Wolves career he’s shown application at times this season and there has been some better performances from him.
“But largely, or I think most fans will agree, largely underwhelming from the money Wolves paid for him and his tenure so far. I really would like to think that Goncalo Guedes is done here at Wolves. If they can get the money for him, I’m not sure I want him in and around the squad next season.”
Wolves set for big loss on Guedes
Guedes is Wolves’ fifth-most expensive transfer of all time, costing them a whopping £27.5 million in the summer of 2022.
The forward has scored just seven goals in 49 appearances during that time, with multiple loan spells at Benfica and Villarreal never amounting to interest in a permanent transfer.
The former Valencia star sees his contract at Molineux expire in 2027, putting them under no pressure to sell him this summer, although it would be nice to get his huge wages off the budget.
That being said, after a return of just two goals in 27 top-flight appearances this term, Wolves will find it difficult to pocket close to the money they paid for him three years ago.
