Everton Fans Demand Answers After Premier League Statement on Thierno Barry’s Disallowed Goal
Everton supporters have been left furious after Thierno Barry was denied what appeared to be a second goal during Saturday’s Premier League clash with Ipswich Town.
David Moyes’ side eventually secured a narrow 1-0 victory at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, but the result could have been far more comfortable had Barry’s second-half header been allowed to stand.
The French striker had already put Everton ahead in the first half when James Tarkowski’s long-range effort deflected off him and wrong-footed Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton.
Barry then thought he had doubled Everton’s advantage after meeting Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s corner with a superb glancing header.
The celebrations, however, were cut short.
VAR intervened and the goal was ruled out because Brennan Johnson was deemed to have been interfering with play from an offside position.
Everton Fans Left Furious
The decision immediately sparked debate among Everton supporters.
Johnson was indeed in an offside position, but the major question was whether he actually interfered with Walton’s ability to make a save.
Replays appeared to show Johnson some distance from the goalkeeper, leading many Everton supporters to question why Barry’s goal had been overturned.
The decision became one of the biggest talking points of the match, particularly because Everton were unable to add another goal despite creating opportunities.
Moyes himself admitted afterwards that the situation was difficult to assess.
Speaking after the match, the Everton boss questioned whether Johnson had actually impeded the goalkeeper while acknowledging that the forward had been offside.
Premier League’s VAR Explanation Under Scrutiny
The controversy comes at a time when Premier League officiating is already facing intense attention.
The league has introduced greater transparency around major refereeing decisions this season through its Key Match Incident Panel, which independently assesses key decisions involving match officials and VAR.
That means incidents such as Barry’s disallowed goal can receive further scrutiny after the weekend’s fixtures.
For Everton supporters, however, the frustration is understandable.
The Toffees had already done enough to secure three points, but the disallowed goal would have provided Moyes’ side with valuable breathing room during the closing stages.
Instead, Ipswich remained within touching distance and continued to threaten, particularly after Everton were unable to put the game beyond doubt.
Barry Continues His Strong Start
Despite the controversy, Barry still emerged as the match-winner.
His deflected first-half effort was enough to give Everton their second Premier League victory of the campaign and extend their unbeaten start.
The result moved Everton up to fifth in the table, while Barry continued to make his presence felt in his second Premier League season.
Sky Sports described the disallowed goal as a controversial intervention by VAR, while other reports also highlighted the frustration surrounding the decision.
For Everton, the three points are ultimately what matter most.
But the debate surrounding Barry’s disallowed header is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
And with the Premier League increasingly placing its major officiating decisions under the microscope, supporters will now be waiting to see whether the incident receives further explanation.
Do you think Thierno Barry’s second goal should have stood? 👀
Was Brennan Johnson genuinely interfering with play, or did VAR go too far?
