Alex Neil will fear Mihailo Ivanovic’s Millwall contract update after Leicester City links

The Millwall boss was desperate to see his star striker remain beyond deadline day, but this season could be the Serbian’s last for the Lions.

Following his impressive return of 12 goals in 37 Championship outings last season for Millwall, Ivanovic has attracted significant transfer attention.

In June, reports emerged that Premier League outfit Wolves were tracking Ivanovic and towards the latter stages of the summer window, Leicester City targeted the Millwall striker as an heir to Jamie Vardy’s King Power throne.

EFL Analysis exclusively revealed that the transfer did not come to fruition because Leicester couldn’t sell enough to fund an Ivanovic move, and now an update regarding the frontman has come to light, which will not please Neil.

Worrying update about Mihailo Ivanovic’s Millwall contract

Thankfully for the Lions, Leicester’s financial issues and the Foxes’ failure to sell Patson Daka meant that they were unable to stump up the funds for the Serbian centre-forward.

After arriving at the Den from Serbian top flight side Vojvodina FC last summer, the youngster has 13 goals for Millwall to his name, but has yet to score this season.

Neil will be hoping to see Ivanovic get off the mark this season when Millwall face Charlton Athletic on Saturday afternoon in an inevitably fierce South London derby clash, with the striker’s contractual uncertainty lingering.

In the latest Ivanovic update, Journalist Pete O’Rourke said on X: “Millwall have yet to offer star striker Mihailo Ivanovic a new deal despite pricing him out of a potential move away in the summer transfer window after clubs made offers for his services.”

Ivanovic signed a long-term contract at Millwall in 2024, and although the expiration date is unconfirmed, the striker will want what he believes he is owed as one of the best young forwards in the Championship.

Although Neil would tend to disagree with that praise, but in a far more positive sense.

Alex Neil’s lofty praise for Millwall striker Mihailo Ivanovic

Neil is desperate for Ivanovic to stay at Millwall, and rightly so, given his already prolific nature as well as his potential to develop even further in English football.

After Ivanovic scored a brace against Portsmouth to secure three points for play-off chasing Millwall, Neil admitted that the Serbian was at the time ‘one of the top 10 young talents in Europe’.

As per the St Albans Review, Neil said: “Any 20-year-old that leads the line in the Championship and can get nearly (10 goals), and he’ll get double figures before the end of the season.

“If you do that, that’s an unbelievable season and it won’t be surprising me if people start talking about him.

“I’ve already seen something the other day talking about the top 10 young talents in Europe – he’s one of them.

“He’s 20 years of age, there are very few strikers at that age that will lead the line at this level and also score goals, so he deserves all the plaudits he gets.”

In the first Millwall vs Charlton derby in five years, Ivanovic will be hunting for his first goal of the campaign, although another splendid season in front of goal will undoubtedly court further transfer attention.
