England Fans Turn on Bukayo Saka After Spain Defeat as Arsenal Star Accused of ‘Diving’
England fans have taken to social media to express their frustration with Bukayo Saka following the Three Lions’ dramatic 3-2 defeat to Spain at Wembley.
England found themselves involved in an entertaining Nations League clash, but Spain ultimately claimed all three points after a late goal from Mikel Oyarzabal settled the contest.
Spain opened the scoring inside the first two minutes after Marc Guehi’s mistake allowed Lamine Yamal to create an opportunity.
England responded strongly, however, with Anthony Gordon finishing off a quick counter-attack before Harry Kane put Thomas Tuchel’s side ahead with a header that took a deflection off Marc Cucurella.
Spain refused to surrender and eventually turned the game around in the second half.
Alex Baena brought the visitors level before Oyarzabal produced the decisive moment in the 74th minute, lifting the ball over goalkeeper Trafford to complete Spain’s comeback.
Saka Incident Sparks Anger
Saka started the match for England but found himself at the centre of attention during the first half for an incident involving Spain winger Nico Williams.
The Arsenal star went to ground following a challenge from Williams and appealed for a foul.
The referee, however, decided to allow play to continue.
Replays appeared to show some contact between the two players, although the official did not believe it warranted a foul.
What appeared to frustrate some England supporters was what happened moments later.
As the ball came back towards Saka, the winger quickly got back to his feet and continued chasing the play before winning a free-kick for England.
That sequence prompted accusations from some supporters that Saka had gone to ground too easily.
England Fans React
Social media quickly became filled with criticism of the Arsenal attacker.
One supporter described the incident as part of what they considered a wider “diving culture” in English football, while another labelled Saka a “diving cheat”.
Others were similarly unhappy, with one fan describing the incident as an “embarrassment” and claiming that Saka had remained on the ground before getting back up when the ball returned.
However, Saka was not booked for the incident, meaning the referee did not consider the action worthy of a yellow card.
The criticism came on a difficult night for the Arsenal forward, who was unable to register a goal or assist before being substituted in the 83rd minute.
According to FotMob, Saka finished the match with a 6.3 rating.
England will now have to regroup after suffering a narrow defeat to the reigning European champions, while Saka will undoubtedly face further scrutiny following the controversial moment at Wembley.
