Aston Villa have been warned that a major defensive decision could be costing them valuable Premier League points after their frustrating 2-2 draw with Brentford, with Tyrone Mings facing serious questions over his place in Unai Emery’s starting XI.

Villa looked on course for victory after John McGinn put them ahead late in the second half, but Kristoffer Ajer’s equaliser exposed familiar defensive weaknesses and left Emery disappointed with another dropped opportunity.

Although Villa showed encouraging attacking improvements compared with their defeat to Nottingham Forest, their problems at the back remain a concern. Mings endured a difficult afternoon, making a costly error in the build-up to Brentford’s opening goal.

The experienced defender has made 216 appearances for Villa, but his partnership with Victor Lindelof is increasingly coming under scrutiny.

Lindelof possesses impressive technical ability and has been viewed as a replacement for Ezri Konsa in central defence. However, the combination with Mings has struggled to provide the aggression, mobility and defensive security Emery needs.

Neither player managed to win a tackle against Brentford, raising further doubts about whether they should continue starting together.

Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor will inevitably be part of the conversation among Villa supporters as concerns grow over the team’s defensive performances and Emery’s selection decisions. With Villa preparing for their Champions League meeting with Fenerbahce, the manager must carefully consider whether changes are needed.

Pau Torres could offer a more suitable partnership with Lindelof, provided he is fit enough to start. Taylor Harwood-Bellis is another option, having demonstrated impressive passing ability during his time in the Championship.

Emery has expressed satisfaction with Lindelof’s progress, but Mings’ latest performance has intensified the debate over his role in the team.

Villa have shown signs of improvement during this transitional campaign, yet their defensive combinations remain a potential weakness.

If Emery wants his side to challenge consistently on multiple fronts, finding the right centre-back partnership could prove crucial. Continuing with Mings and Lindelof together may simply be a risk Villa can no longer afford
