ROB LEE TELLS NEWCASTLE UNITED HE KNOWS THE IDEAL MAN TO REPLACE MATHIAS JAISSLE IF THE CLUB DECIDES TO PART WAYS WITH HIM AND HE’S CONVINCED HE COULD DO EVEN BETTER THAN EDDIE HOWE IF HIRED BY THE CLUB!
Rob Lee has told Newcastle United that he knows the ideal man to replace Mathias Jaissle if the club decides to part ways with the German and he is convinced the candidate could do an even better job than Eddie Howe.
The Newcastle legend did not hold back when asked about the mounting pressure on Jaissle, insisting that the club should not settle for a sideways step if they decide to make a change.
Lee has been a vocal observer of Newcastle’s struggles this season, with Jaissle under scrutiny after a difficult start that has left the Magpies 11th in the Premier League. Back-to-back defeats to Coventry and Aston Villa have intensified the debate, though the club’s hierarchy reportedly remain supportive of the German for now.
But Lee believes that if Newcastle are serious about returning to the top end of the table, they need a manager with elite pedigree and he has a specific name in mind.
“I’ve watched this team closely, and I’ll tell you this there’s a manager out there who has coached at the very highest level, who has managed giant clubs and handled superstar dressing rooms, and who would command instant respect at St James’ Park,” Lee said. “He’s available, he’s hungry, and he would take Newcastle forward rather than backward.”
That man, Lee believes, is Julian Nagelsmann — the former Bayern Munich and Germany boss who has been without a club since leaving the national team after the 2026 World Cup.
Lee was particularly critical of the idea that Newcastle should persist with an unproven project when the club’s ambitions demand immediate progress.
“Eddie Howe did a brilliant job at Newcastle. He won a trophy, he got them into the Champions League twice. But football moves on, and sometimes you need someone who can take you to the next level. Nagelsmann has done it at Bayern, he’s managed the pressure of a national team, and he knows what it takes to compete at the very top.”
The former Newcastle captain acknowledged that Jaissle inherited a difficult situation, with the departures of Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes leaving a significant void. But he insisted that sympathy cannot overshadow the need for results.
“I understand the circumstances. I understand the squad was gutted in the summer. But Newcastle is not a club that can afford to write off a season. The fans demand better, and rightly so. If the board decide to make a change, they cannot afford to get it wrong again.”
Lee warned against repeating the mistakes of the past, referencing the chaos that followed Howe’s departure and the rushed appointment of Jaissle.
“Newcastle made a mess of the last appointment. They went for a coach with a good reputation in Austria and Saudi Arabia, but the Premier League is a different beast. You need someone who has been at the top, who understands the pace, the pressure, the scrutiny. That’s what I’d be looking for.”
He added: “I’m convinced. If Newcastle want to move forward with fresh ideas and a proper rebuild, they need a manager who has already proven he can handle elite players and elite expectations. Give him a proper budget, give him time, and I think he could do something special at St James’ Park even better than what Eddie achieved.”
Lee’s comments will add further pressure on the Newcastle board as they weigh up Jaissle’s future. The German has faced growing criticism from supporters and pundits alike, with questions mounting over his tactical approach, squad management, and ability to get the best out of a group that many believe has underperformed.
For Lee, the answer is clear and he is not shy about saying it.
“If you want to move forward, you need to be brave. Newcastle have always been at their best when they’ve taken a chance on someone with something to prove. But this time, they need someone who has already proven it at the highest level. Nagelsmann is that man. I’m convinced.”
