Frank Lampard’s Coventry City side were beaten by Sunderland in the Championship play-off semi-final and former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan has made a transfer demand
Coventry City have been urged to provide Frank Lampard with financial backing in the transfer market following Coventry City’s play-off disappointment against Sunderland.
The Sky Blues were tantalisingly close to extending their impressive revival under Lampard, who assumed control when the team was languishing in 17th place and nearly reached a penalty shoot-out that could have secured them a spot in the Wembley final.
Dan Ballard’s goal in the dying moments of the game propelled the Black Cats towards a clash with Sheffield United, leaving Coventry City to contemplate another season in the Championship.
Ex-Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan has advised Coventry supremo Doug King to bolster Lampard’s squad. Speaking on talkSPORT, Jordan remarked: “I think that he [Lampard] goes again next year. It depends what his owner does,”.
“If they are ambitious, then they’ll go again and give Frank some more resources. Twenty-odd million euros was spent last year on players, which is not unrespectable inside the Championship.”, reports Coventry Live.
Jordan also noted the club’s unity, saying: “I think the club is together again, the initial shock-waves about the reaction of Mark Robins being fired has long since diminished.
“Frank is part of it now, the team’s playing well, I think they can go again, but I think it’s going to be difficult for him.”
Commentator Danny Murphy has suggested that the Sky Blues might find themselves better prepared for Premier League football in the 2026/27 season than if they had been promoted this term, proposing that an ascent this year ‘would have been too early’.
Jordan dismissed such ideas, supporting Lampard’s tactical nous. “You take it whilst it’s there, it’s manifest destiny. You grab what’s yours, you take it whilst you can,” he insisted.
The commentary continued, with a blunt assessment: “The narrative is now being written, it’s written, which is the promoted sides are c**p. They’re all going to get 66 points aggregated over the course of the of the season, and everyone’s gonna go down with that relegation on their on their CV.”
Jordan then pondered Lampard’s potential impact, saying, “If Frank Lampard either pushed the envelope and got them close to staying up or kept them up, his currency would have gone..”
He further scrutinised the approach taken by some, adding, “If he went into the Premier League didn’t do the nonsense of the Russell Martins and people of that nature that stuck to a philosophy irrespective of the reality of what was in front of their bleedin’ eyes and went down with a whimper. Then no, he wouldn’t be, although I think he’s a pragmatist, Lampard. I think he’s a sensible lad.”
