Regis Le Bris sends powerful Sunderland message ahead of play-off final
Sunderland’s head coach has hailed the connection with the club’s fans as they head to Wembley
Regis Le Bris says Sunderland are ready to embrace the challenge of Saturday’s Championship Play-Off final against Sheffield United.
The head coach led his side to a dramatic semi-final victory over Coventry City, with Dan Ballard’s last-gasp extra-time winner sealing a place in the final, delivering an unforgettable night for players and supporters alike.
“We’re looking forward to such a unique occasion at Wembley Stadium,” said Le Bris. “The semi-final was two tough legs against a very strong team. The ending was outstanding, and it was a scenario which could be written for movies.”
Ballard’s header, which made it 1-1 on the night but 3-2 over the two legs, sparked wild celebrations at the Stadium of Light, and Le Bris believes the moment reflected the powerful bond that has grown between the squad and the supporters this season.
“For our fans, it was really positive,” he maintained. “The connection we have made this season was really strong, and they deserved to feel those emotions.”
But the head coach was quick to shift focus to the challenge ahead – a final hurdle, and a meeting with a Sheffield United side aiming to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
“We have another step to go, and again, it will be a tough one,” he continued. “It was important to celebrate, because we have already achieved so much, but we want more.”
With more than 35,000 Sunderland fans heading to Wembley Stadium, Le Bris emphasised the role supporters will once again play in driving his players on.
“To feel our fans behind us is massive. It’s not just a game – it’s something more important,” he said. “When the players feel their support, they can get through tough moments and create something unexpected.
“The discipline and togetherness of the group has been really impressive, especially in tough moments, and they have learned from so many experiences.”
“I’m really proud and I think that is the case for everyone. We have to live these moments and enjoy the experiences. We have to be the best version of Sunderland as possible and we will fight ‘Til The End.”
