Kieran McKenna drops Liam Delap transfer bombshell amid Newcastle United interest

Latest Newcastle news and rumours as summer transfer target Liam Delap is expected to leave Ipswich Town this summer

Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna has dropped a significant hint about the future of reported Newcastle United transfer target Liam Delap.

Eddie Howe’s side have enjoyed a fantastic season, having clinched the Carabao Cup to end their 70-year wait for silverware back in March. They are also among the favourites to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Just one game remains in the Premier League, with the Magpies hosting Everton at St James’ Park on Sunday – a match they must win to guarantee a top-five finish ahead of the likes of Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.

Once the season concludes, focus will shift to the next campaign, and attacking additions are expected, particularly with uncertainty surrounding the future of Callum Wilson.

Howe will be eager to bring in suitable backup for Alexander Isak to ensure the squad has enough depth to compete on multiple fronts next season.

Delap is one of the names linked with a move to the North East, while Chelsea and Manchester United have also been credited with interest in the striker.

He is expected to be available for a cut-price fee this summer following Ipswich Town’s relegation from the top flight amid reports of a £30million release clause.

Speaking during his final press conference of the season, Ipswich boss McKenna dropped a significant hint on Delap’s future, conceding that he expects the 22-year-old to move on at the end of the season.

“He’s looking at his options for next year,” McKenna told the media on Friday. “There’s a lot of interest and rightly so.

“It’s looking more likely he goes rather than stays.”

That update will come as a major boost for Newcastle United, although there is no escaping the fierce competition for his signature.

Other names that have been tentatively linked with a move ahead of the summer transfer window include Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku and Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic, both of whom are expected to be available in the coming months.
