Birmingham City are preparing for life back in the Championship after a sublime 2024/25 season
Former Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Bromwich Albion fan favourite Don Goodman admits that now is an exciting time for supporters of Birmingham City as they look ahead to an action-packed summer transfer window after steamrolling their way to promotion by winning the League One title.
The Blues picked up a record-breaking 111 points in the third tier to secure an immediate return back to the Championship after relegation in 2024 and the manner in which they went about it makes many fans believe they are capable of winning back-to-back promotions.
Blues co-owner and chairman Tom Wagner is hopeful of building the club into a real force to be reckoned with in English football in the years to come and has laid out plans to build a state of the art sports centre in England’s second city which will boast a new super stadium holding around 62,000 supporters.
Don Goodman predicts continued Birmingham City rise
Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman says he has no doubts about Knighthead Capital Management’s ambitions to take Birmingham City to the next level and reach the Premier League for the first time since 2010/11.
He told Football League World that more good times are likely to be around the corner: “I’ve got no doubt about the ambition of Tom Wagner for Birmingham City. The plans have been there from the very start in terms of the proposed new stadium, the development of the infrastructure around that stadium and the amenities of the local area. It’s all very, very ambitious and very exciting if you’re a Birmingham City supporter.”
Knighthead Capital Management have reportedly already spent around £3bn to obtain the land in the area formerly known as Birmingham Whales and the ambitious plans are also expected to include other sporting facilities and commercial and residential spaces which will help generate even more money to allow the club to comply with Profit and Sustainability rules.
How soon can Birmingham City reach the Premier League?
Birmingham City finished their 2024/25 campaign with 111 points in a record-breaking campaign which eclipsed Reading’s long-standing EFL record of 106 points at Championship level under Steve Coppell in 2005/06.
Current Blues boss Chris Davies notably spent £15m alone on the signing of Fulham ace Jay Stansfield along with other big names – and it’s expected that further big-money signings could be on the way to help bridge the gap between the third tier and the Championship ahead of another exciting season.
The Blues will have ambitions of making the immediate jump up to the Premier League, but are likely to face firm competition from Ipswich Town – a team with experience of back-to-back promotion after their recent relegation – along with Southampton, 2024 winners Leicester City and beaten play-off finalists Sheffield United along with a Coventry City team that ended the season in excellent form under Frank Lampard.
After winning promotion, Davies said, via Sky Sports: “There is real ambition and that is what attracted me here – even though the club went down to League One. There’s real investment and they’ve got big plans. Everything suggested the owners were serious about this project and it excited me.”
