‘Agreement very close’ – major Matheus Cunha update as Arsenal race to beat Man United to Wolves gem

Arsenal are reportedly attempting to hijack Manchester United’s swoop for Wolverhampton Wanderers attacker Matheus Cunha.

It’s become an inevitability now that Cunha will be leaving Molineux this summer after a £62.5 million release clause was included in the new contract he signed back in February. The Brazil international feels forever indebted to Wolves for the platform the club has given him – and he will keep a close eye on their progress – but it’s nearly time for a new challenge.

Cunha’s next destination is yet to be confirmed but Manchester United have been leading the race for the past couple of weeks. Birmingham World understands that the Red Devils have alerted Wolves of their intention to activate Cunha’s release clause and have since been negotiating with the player and his representatives over the financial side.

Although Cunha is on board with Man Utd’s footballing project, there’s still a little way to go to reach a full agreement. As a result, other teams interested – including the likes of Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa – still have time to attempt their own swoops.

Then there’s Arsenal, another team with a strong interest. The Gunners are eager to bolster their attacking ranks after falling short in the recent Premier League title race with Liverpool. It was clear to see that their main shortfall was not having enough fit attackers, while Mikel Arteta is lacking an out-and-out centre-forward.

Cunha isn’t exactly the striker Arsenal are looking for as he’s more of a number 10 or an inside forward, but he’d certainly strengthen their title bid ahead of next season. Coupled with a proper centre-forward signing, Cunha could make a huge impact and help the Gunners move that one step closer to Liverpool.

GOAL Brazil reports Arsenal are making a “late push” to sign Cunha, while reporter Ben Jacobs claims the Gunners have made “fresh contact” with the player’s representatives. Arsenal’s new sporting director, Andrea Berta, was the one who signed Cunha for Atletico in the first place. He then later sold the attacker to Wolves.

Despite Arsenal’s resurgence, Man Utd very much remain the frontrunners. The Red Devils are set to continue talks with Cunha to try and strike an agreement, hoping to avoid any surprises. As Jacobs relays, Newcastle are also still in the race but United can be considered the favourites.

Keen to get his future decided before the end of the season, Cunha also doesn’t want any late surprises. The forward will no doubt consider any potential proposals coming his way from other clubs, though, with this arguably the most important decision of his career so far.

Cunha has scored 15 goals and made six assists in 30 Premier League appearances this campaign, his best-ever return in a single season. In total, the 13-time Brazil international has contributed 33 goals and 15 assists in 89 matches for Wolves, more than paying back the £42 million fee paid to sign him from Atletico Madrid in 2023.
