We understand that the Blues will target five main positions in the summer and will be among the biggest spenders across the EFL.
Birmingham already have a quality squad that dominated League One but the competition in the Championship is much tougher, so it’s not surprising to see the Midlands outfit making big plans.
On this front, they should be taking a look at one player who would add quality depth to their side and has already been told to leave his current club.
Thelo Aasgaard has been told to leave Luton Town
While Birmingham are on an upward trajectory right now, Luton Town have suffered back-to-back relegations from the top flight and will be plying their trade in League One next term.
The Hatters had a torrid season and tried to solve their decline by securing a move for Thelo Aasgaard in January.
He signed from Wigan Athletic but could not help Luton stay up, and has now been told to leave them.
The 23-year-old is a Norway international and speaking after his club’s relegation, Norway manager Stale Solbakken told Aasgaard to seek a transfer.
He said: “It was a calculated risk. Luton were in a difficult situation when Thelo changed clubs, but it goes without saying that it is difficult to play for the national team if you play in League One.
“There are many leagues he can play in. He is a versatile midfielder with good qualities both offensively and defensively.”
How Thelo Aasgaard compares to Birmingham City’s Willum Willumsson
Aasgaard is a natural attacking midfielder capable of playing in a slightly deeper midfield role and also off the left.
Prior to his Luton move, he scored an impressive eight goals and provided two assists in 26 League One matches for Wigan.
If Birmingham were to pursue a move, he’d likely be primarily competing with Willum Willumsson for a starting berth.
Willumsson made 41 appearances in the third tier last term, mostly in the 10 role but also on the right. In said ties, he scored six and assisted eight.
The 26-year-old remains a quality option, but with Birmingham expected to want another promotion next year, adding quality depth to compete in every position will be crucial, and Aasgaard would be the perfect option to strengthen Birmingham’s attacking midfield department.
