Burroughs Signs Two-Year Deal at Sixfields After Leaving Coventry
Versatile 24-year-old defender Jack Burroughs has put pen to paper on an initial two-year deal with Northampton Town, marking a fresh chapter in his footballing journey following his release from Coventry City earlier this week.
A boyhood Coventry supporter, Burroughs grew up dreaming of playing for the Sky Blues and began his footballing journey with the club at just eight years old. He progressed through the ranks at Coventry’s youth academy and eventually broke into the senior team, making his debut in 2017 at the age of 17 in an EFL Trophy clash. In doing so, he became the first player born in the 21st century to represent the club at senior level.
Over the course of his time at Coventry, Burroughs made 20 senior appearances, showcasing his adaptability across various positions on the pitch. While he has primarily operated as a right-back or right wing-back in recent years, he is equally comfortable on the left side of the defence and has the technical and tactical awareness to step into midfield when needed, making him a valuable utility option for any squad.
Despite his early promise and association with Coventry, much of Burroughs’ senior experience has been gained through a series of loan spells designed to aid his development. He had a stint in the Scottish Premiership with Ross County, where he featured 18 times, before making 35 appearances for Lincoln City in League One — a move that offered him consistent game time in a highly competitive environment.
Most recently, he spent the first half of the 2023/24 season back in Scotland with Kilmarnock, registering 14 appearances, including 12 in the top flight. However, that loan spell was cut short in January, prompting his return to Coventry, where he featured for the club’s Under-21 side and was named on the bench for a couple of Championship fixtures during the latter part of the season.
Although born in England, Burroughs qualifies to play for Scotland through family heritage and has represented the Tartan Army at youth level. He has earned eight caps each for Scotland’s Under-19 and Under-21 national teams, further highlighting his pedigree and experience on the international stage.
Now joining Northampton Town, also known as the Cobblers, Burroughs will be aiming to establish himself as a key figure at Sixfields. His versatility, experience across both English and Scottish leagues, and grounding in a Championship-level setup make him a smart acquisition for the League One side. With a two-year contract in place, Burroughs has the platform to kick on and make a significant impact as he enters the next stage of his professional career.
