Championship news as Bamford hints at next move and Ipswich target ex-Middlesbrough star’s son
Patrick Bamford admits he’d be open to a move to the MLS, with his Leeds United future in question after promotion to the Premier League.
The former Boro man struggled with injuries this season as Leeds claimed 100 points to win the Championship. Restricted to just 17 sub appearances, he failed to score a single goal, with one against Boro at the Riverside chalked off for offside.
With Leeds now heading to the Premier League, Bamford’s future at Elland Road in is question as they look to strengthen their squad for the difficult task of trying to stay up. While Bamford feels he could still do a job in the top flight, he hasn’t ruled out a move, with the MLS an attractive prospect to him.
Speaking in an interview with CBS Sports Golazo, Bamford said: “I think it’s something that, obviously over time I’ve spoke to Michaela [his wife] about it, in terms of playing abroad, and America being one of the options. It was something that when I was younger I always wanted to do at some point in my career, to kind of experience it, experience a new country, the living the lifestyle there and also trying myself in a new league.
“I think once you have a family and a wife it’s got to be run by them and to be fair they gave it the green light, and they said ‘look, we’re going to go with whatever’s for you and whatever challenge you want to want to take’, so it is something that I would be open to yeah, we just don’t know when yet.
“I’ve got lots of years left in me. I feel like playing in the Premier League suits me a little bit more. Last time round I did pretty well when I was there. So I’m hoping to emulate that and try and do the same again.”
Ipswich keen on ex-Boro star’s son
According to a report in the Sun, Ipswich are keen on signing defender Max Johnston – the son of former Boro winger Allan. Max, 21, is enjoying his second season in Austria for Sturm Graz. He helped them win a league and cup double in his first year and they’re currently top again.
A right-back, Ipswich are said to view Johnston Jnr as a replacement for Ben Johnson, who is said to be a target for Fulham following the Tractor Boys’ relegation. Sturm Graz are said to value Johnston at £3.5m after he made his Scotland debut in March.
Ruben Selles future latest
Hull City officials are said to be meeting in the next few days to determine whether or not to sack Ruben Selles, according to our sister site Hull Live. As Boro ponder Michael Carrick’s future, there are already a number of Championship clubs looking for new bosses this summer.
A number of key officials at the club are set to travel to Istanbul for meetings which are set to start on Tuesday. Similar to Boro, they will be reviewing the season in which they were very nearly relegated from the Championship and those reviews will ultimately decide the fate of the former Reading boss who replaced Tim Walter midway through the season.
