“Contact made”- West Ham are set to make £17M Genoa first summer signing

AC Milan and Fiorentina join West Ham in registering a concrete interest in the Serie A midfielder.

West Ham have made contact with Genoa over a possible transfer move for midfielder Morten Frendrup this summer with the 24-year-old expected to leave the Serie A outfit.

GiveMeSport report that the Hammers have joined AC Milan and Fiorentina in making the first steps to beginning negotiations over a move for Frendrup. The player made the move to Genoa in 2022 from Brondby and has gone on to make 124 appearances for the side.

Frendrup made his first appearance for Denmark last September and has made a place in Brian Riemer’s squad for the 2026 World Cup a priority. That is believed to be the motivation for a move away from Genoa, who sit 13th in the Serie A.

West Ham ‘make contact’ with Genoa over transfer

A defensive midfielder, West Ham could make Frendrup a target to replace stalwart Tomas Soucek this summer. The Czech international has emerged as a transfer target for Everton while Guido Rodriguez and Carlos Soler will both leave the London Stadium at the end of their loan deals.

It’s claimed that a bid of around £17 million would be enough for Genoa to green light a sale. Frendrup was linked with a move to Liverpool last summer but Arne Slot’s side ended up boosting their midfield options with other new arrivals.

Reacting to those links at the end of last year’s summer window, the midfielder said: “It’s obviously a huge club, but it’s a long way from concrete interest. For me, it’s about doing as well as possible. So, everything else is up to my agent.

“I’m super happy to be at Genoa. I feel it’s a really good place to be, where I can develop and get a lot of playing time. It wasn’t in my thoughts to switch this summer. It’s always nice to have interest, but it’s about doing as well as possible and then we’ll see what it brings.”

Breaking the Lines published an in-depth look at the player’s qualities this year and praised the midfielder for his ‘combative spirit’ and ‘warrior’ performances. It’s added: “The Danish midfielder has been excelling in a side lacking in depth and might be very soon where he might step up amongst the biggest names in Europe. But whilst Genoa are all but confirmed to stay up, sitting 14 points clear of the drop with five matches remaining, they find themselves with little chance of keeping hold of Frendrup, whose contract expires in 2028.”

Graham Potter looking to add youth at the London Stadium

West Ham manager Graham Potter has not been dragged into many discussions about plans for the summer window but it is widely accepted that he wants to add youth to the Hammers squad. At 24 years old, Frendrup is a more youthful option than 30-year-old Soucek, 28-year-old Soler, 31-year-old Rodriguez, 27-year-old Edson Alvarez and 30-year-old James Ward-Prowse.

Speaking about plans for the summer window, Potter said: “It’s hard to say at the moment (how many players will leave and how many will arrive this summer. I think I wouldn’t want to quantify it (with a specific number).

“There’s a saying, isn’t there – if you can’t change people, change people. We have to make decisions that make sure the club is in a better place going forward. We’re working with the players we have. We’re working all the time to try to get the level we want.”
