“Could be huge”- Dave Edwards urges Pierera to shun Matheus Cunha and make signings for Wolves that could have massive effects
A big summer awaits Wolves, as the club look to push on after a turbulent 2024/25 campaign.
Wanderers will play in the Premier League again in 2025/26, after ensuring their safety a few weeks ago.
Fans have been delighted with how things have gone under Vitor Pereira, when things looked so bleak at the start of the calendar year following an awful first half of the season under Gary O’Neil.
Pereira has changed the picture completely at Wolves, and there is a growing feeling that good times could return under the Portuguese.
But Wolves face the prospect of losing several key players again this summer.
So it will be vital for Molineux officials to offset those players leaving by bringing in some quality players.
There is a high chance we’ll see more young players with big potential join the club, as is the recruitment policy these days.
But Dave Edwards has urged the club to do something a bit different regarding one position in the team.
Dave Edwards wants to see Wolves sign an older midfielder
Wolves have a very strong pool of midfield options at the moment.
Andre and Joao Gomes have been getting better and better this season, and the two Brazilians are now arguably among the best in their position in the Premier League.
Pereira also has Marshall Munetsi and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde as options to play in midfield, plus Tommy Doyle, although he is likely to leave Wolves this summer.
Boubacar Traore is another central midfield option for the Wolves manager.
But Edwards reckons Wolves could do with an older, more experienced head in the team for next season.
He said on the Wolves Official Podcast: “If you look at the two Brazilian boys, Munetsi and Bellegarde, all of them are very athletic, all of them can carry the ball with their pace and their power.
“But there is room, definitely, and from someone who’s been in the dressing room, it is really, really important as well. Because you’ve got a lot of young footballers who Wolves are trying to develop into being the best possible versions of themselves.
“If you have someone like a Joao Moutinho who’s been there and done it, played at the very best level and you’re watching how he acts every single day, how he’s approaching his gym sessions, how he’s approaching his recovery, how he approaches every single day on the training pitch, it has a massive effect.
“Because you’ve got a perfect role model to say, this is how you need to do it. But obviously, it’s about finding a player who’s at that part of their career, who will naturally cost money in terms of wages.
“But the benefit could be huge, they’re not easy to find. I think that is an area where you could get an extra player in midfield which is not going to disrupt and still going to play minutes.”
Edwards also stated he’d love Wolves to re-sign Nelson Semedo, calling him one of the best full-backs in the Premier League. As things currently stand, the captain will leave this summer when his contract expires.
But Semedo has suggested a contract extension at Wolves is still possible.
Experienced head is needed at Wolves
The way Wolves operate in the transfer market these days is very clear. The main goal is to sign young players who have high potential, so the club can make a big profit on them in the future.
That recruitment policy has served Wolves well to a degree, but there has been no challenge for European football for several years now.
And arguably, Wolves can’t hope to properly push on without the right blend of players.
Having a couple of experienced heads in the squad next season could be vital.
Joao Moutinho was a superb signing for Wolves and it was often said how much of a professional he was behind the scenes.
With Traore and Doyle likely to seal loan exits this summer, there is definitely scope to bring in someone who’s around the age of 30 and open to a rotational role.
