Newcastle United are showing interest in Angers goalkeeper Yahia Fofana ahead of the summer transfer window, journalist Pete O’Rourke has revealed.
The Magpies have reportedly sent scouts to watch the 24-year-old shot-stopper in action in France as they look to bring in competition for Nick Pope at St James’ Park this offseason.
While Burnley star James Trafford remains top of their shortlist, Fofana is seen as an alternative to the England goalkeeper, who could prove to be a much more expensive option.
Fofana, who joined Angers from Le Havre in 2022, has just over a year left on his contract, which runs until the summer of 2026.

According to O’Rourke, Fofana is seen at Newcastle as a goalkeeper with ‘real potential’ following his impressive performances in Ligue 1 this season.
The 24-year-old, regarded as ‘one of the best young goalkeepers in Europe’, has kept six clean sheets and conceded 46 goals in 29 appearances for Angers in 2024/25.
Despite being linked with Southampton shot-stopper Aaron Ramsdale, Newcastle are believed to be targeting younger options instead, with Fofana and Trafford earmarked as potential arrivals.
While it remains unclear how much the Ivory Coast international could cost this summer, Trafford is believed to be valued at around £30m.
Newcastle are anticipating a busy summer under Howe after resolving their PSR concerns and are targeting several key reinforcements to strengthen their starting XI.
