Derby County are poised to cut ties with the forward at the end of next month. His contract with DCFC is due to expire and he will become available as a free agent as things stand.
Washington, 32, hasn’t featured at all for the Rams this past season. They managed to secure their Championship status on the final day.
In this latest update regarding the player’s future at Pride Park, DerbyshireLive report he is expected to head out the exit door. He will have to weigh up his options over the coming months.
The attacker could have left back in January. Ex-boss Paul Warne told DerbyshireLive at the time: “I’ve had really honest conversations with Conor and just said, ‘look, you will have to wait for an opportunity’. Come January, if he has had no opportunities, and I know how the world works, he may want to play elsewhere. He hasn’t said that, but I would say the same, by the way, as a player. If I knew my options were limited, I would want to go play somewhere else. When you get older, you become more impatient.”
Derby County latest regarding Conor Washington
Derby County signed Washington back in July 2023. DCFC brought him in just over two years ago to bolster their attacking ranks.
He made 22 appearances in all competitions during his first campaign and chipped in with three goals. The Rams were promoted last year from League One along with Portsmouth and Oxford United.
The Kent-born man has played 515 games so far in his career and has scored 175 goals. He has also made 43 caps for the Northern Ireland national team.
Washington has had spells in the past at Newport County, Peterborough United, QPR, Sheffield United, Hearts, Charlton Athletic and Rotherham United. He found the net on six occasions in 37 outings for the latter before his switch to his current club.
What now for Derby County?
Derby County have an important couple of months ahead on the transfer front. DCFC manager John Eustace will be looking to put his own stamp on the squad.
The Rams turned to the former Birmingham City man back in February after they sacked Warne. He left fellow second tier side Blackburn Rovers to take over and managed to keep them up.
Parting ways with Washington will suit both parties involved. He will be off the wage bill and will be free to find himself a new home which is what he needs.
