Fabio Tavares has shared a heartfelt message with Coventry City supporters as he brings his time with the club to an end, marking a new chapter in his footballing career. The 24-year-old striker has officially signed with League One side Burton Albion, becoming the first confirmed departure of the Sky Blues’ summer transfer window.
Tavares has agreed to a one-year deal with the Brewers that will see him remain at the Pirelli Stadium for the 2025/26 campaign. The move follows a relatively successful loan spell at Burton during the second half of the previous season, where he made a positive impact in their fight against relegation. In 10 appearances, Tavares found the back of the net twice, contributing significantly to the club’s dramatic push to avoid dropping into League Two.
In an emotional message posted to social media, Tavares reflected on his journey with Coventry and expressed his gratitude to the club and its fanbase. “After 4 years, my time at Coventry is done,” he wrote. “It’s been a privelledge [sic] and honour to play for this great club. I’ve met some great people in my time there and made even better memories. Wishing all the staff, players, and everyone involved with the club all the best in their futures. Thank you SBA for all the support over the last years. I will forever appreciate it and miss you. PUSB!!!”
Tavares joined Coventry City in 2021 and during his four-year stint at the club, he struggled to nail down a regular spot in the first team. Despite showing flashes of promise, including a memorable performance against Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley last season, consistent game time proved elusive. In total, he made just 27 senior appearances for the Sky Blues, most of them coming in cup competitions or off the bench in league games.
The 2024/25 season was particularly challenging for the forward. He featured just twice for Coventry in the first half of the campaign and did not play a single minute under new manager Frank Lampard, who took charge in November. Seeking regular playing time, Tavares made the move to Burton Albion in January, where he quickly impressed despite facing setbacks.
Burton head coach Gary Bowyer was full of praise for Tavares and expressed his excitement about working with the forward on a permanent basis. “He’s a wonderful lad with great character,” Bowyer said. “Unfortunately for us, he picked up a hamstring injury against Bristol Rovers that kept him out for a while, but when he came back, he took his goal against Birmingham really well and set up Dylan Williams’ winner against Cambridge, which was crucial for us. He’s one of the best finishers at the football club and I’m really excited to be working with him next season.”
While Tavares’ time at Coventry may not have yielded the breakthrough he had hoped for, he departs with gratitude, cherished memories, and a clear determination to reignite his career. Burton Albion will be hoping the talented striker can rediscover his best form and play a pivotal role in their League One campaign next season.
