The PFA recognised Busst’s work at Coventry and Sky Blues in the Community and presented him with the prize before the club’s final home game of the season against Middlesbrough.
Busst made 60 appearances for the Sky Blues before he suffered a career-ending leg injury in a game against Manchester United in April 1996.
The defender broke both the tibia and fibula in his right leg and required 26 operations which could have led to the loss of his leg.
Coventry appointed Busst as the club’s community coach in 1997 before taking over the community scheme in 2003.
He has now run the club’s community programme for 22 years and still makes weekly food deliveries to vulnerable residents in the city as part of his role.
Busst said: “It was an honour and a privilege to be recognised by the PFA who I’ve been part of since 1992, both playing professionally and working in the community.
“They’ve always supported me both on and off the pitch, particularly following my injury in 1996, and to receive this award from them for my community contribution and long-standing service will be held in the highest esteem.”
The PFA’s head of community, Dave Palmer said: “No one is more deserving than Dave to be recognised by our PFA Memento Award.
“He represents and embodies what the PFA strived to achieve in those early days, community transition and career opportunities for our members and Dave’s story is a hugely inspiring one.
“Dave has been a wonderful PFA advocate and is greatly respected by his peers within the network.
“What he has accomplished during a period of over 30 years with Coventry City, firstly as a player and then with great leadership and longevity as head of Sky Blues in the Community has been incredible and truly impactful both for the football club and the Coventry community that Dave and his team serve and support so well.”
