Former Ipswich Town winger Lee Martin has been handed his first managerial role as he takes over at Welling United.
The 38-year-old replaces Rod Stringer at Park View Road, following the Wings’ relegation from the National League South this season.
Martin has decided to call time on his playing career, which ended on a high by winning the Isthmian League South title with Ramsgate.
He now joins the South East London side, who will be playing in the Isthmian Premier in 2025/26 and has expressed his excitement about transitioning from playing to management.
“I can’t wait to get started”. Martin said. “The rebuild has started.
“We’re ahead of the curve in terms of recruitment, we’ve highlighted some good players and the big thing we’re going after now is character.
“We want good characters around the place because we want to merge the players and supporters back together.”
Martin started his career with Manchester United, making three first-team appearances, but spent most of his time away form Old Trafford on loan at multiple clubs.
He was signed by Roy Keane at Town for £1.5m in summer of 2009, where he made 105 appearances for the Blues, scoring six goals during his spell at Portman Road.
After leaving Town in 2013, he played for the likes of Millwall, Northampton (loan), Gillingham, Exeter City, Ebbsfleet United, Dover Athletic and Ashford.
