“I’m sure”- Skysports Pundit reacts as Leeds United makes contact to sign Bayern Munich star- Transfer Deal set to be sealed in major development
Leeds United, along with Crystal Palace, West Ham, Brighton, Fulham and Brentford, were reportedly keen on former Tottenham defender Eric Dier.
The England international is expected to part ways with Bayern Munich this summer after winning his first-ever league title.
He moved to Bavaria in January 2024 and after failing to clinch the Bundesliga crown last season, he succeeded this time around.
David Prutton backs Dier to have thrived at Elland Road
Amid links with a move to Elland Road, Sky Sports pundit David Prutton has backed the 31-year-old to be a decent addition for the Whites.
Given his years of experience in the Premier League and also valuable experience under his belt representing England, he could’ve been a decent fit for a side looking to avoid relegation.
However, according to TBR, Leeds will not be securing his services as, despite talks being held, he has opted to join AS Monaco.
He has agreed terms with the Ligue 1 outfit where he will be signing a two-year contract.
While Bayern were keen on retaining his services, they were only offering a one-year deal and that’s not something he would have wanted
Prutton said: “Eric Dier would have been a pretty decent addition for Leeds, given his experience and his ability at that particular level.
“Hypothetically, it could have been a good signing, as he has played for a big club in the Premier League and has international experience as well.
“However, for every Eric Dier, there’ll be an abundance of other players that can do a very similar job.
“So if this is one that’s passed Leeds by, I’m sure they’ll be fine.”
Leeds United can pursue a younger option than Dier this summer
Dier would have been a strong signing for Leeds due to his versatility, Premier League experience, and leadership qualities.
At 31, his ability to play as a centre-back or defensive midfielder, combined with 365 Tottenham appearances and 49 England caps, would have bolstered Leeds’ defence as they prepare for the Premier League following their Championship title win.
His composure and tactical nous could have stabilised a backline reliant on Ethan Ampadu, Pascal Struijk, and Joe Rodon.
However, with Dier set to join AS Monaco on a two-year deal, Leeds can pivot to a younger player in their prime, ideally aged 24-28, to ensure long-term defensive solidity.
A prime-age signing would offer athleticism, adaptability and resale potential, aligning with Daniel Farke’s squad-building strategy for Premier League survival.
Targeting such a player would future-proof Leeds’ backline while maintaining competitiveness.
