“It’s so embarrassing and I feel sorry for West Ham fans”- Jacob Steinberg shares ‘huge’ West Ham summer after ’embarrassing’ development from what he saw
Jacob Steinberg has mooted a busy summer transfer window for West Ham United this time.
Graham Potter made only one addition to his squad after taking the reins at the London Stadium in January, that too, Evan Ferguson on loan from Brighton.
If there was any optimism that the English tactician would be able to get the most out of a squad that includes players worth £120million from last summer, that surely has dwindled.
The Irons have won only three of their 14 matches under Potter so far and could be sitting just a place above the relegation zone if Wolves draw against Manchester United on Sunday, 19 April.
West Ham in relegation threat under Potter
In the latest line of poor results for West Ham, Potter’s side were held to a 1-1 draw by the already-relegated Southampton at the London Stadium on Saturday, 19 April.
The Hammers’ overall performance left much to be desired, with Steinberg, who is disappointed by how much the team have regressed since winning the UEFA Conference League in 2023, later describing the result as “embarrassing”.
He is of the view that the upcoming summer transfer window will be ‘huge’ for the East London outfit in terms of righting the wrong and avoiding being in a relegation battle next term.
“Embarrassing result for West Ham”, Steinberg wrote on his personal X handle (19 April).
“Amazing there’s such apathy around the place two years after winning a European trophy.
“Huge summer coming up, they will be relegation candidates if this isn’t sorted out (and the promoted teams are any use).”
Potter faces sack at London Stadium
It is worth noting that West Ham are now on a six-game winless run.
Not even Julen Lopetegui had such a terrible run, and there is a feeling that Potter has been getting away with poor performances, and rightfully so.
The Englishman is getting nowhere near the criticism that Lopetegui got in the first half of the season.
Questions must be asked of the former Chelsea manager about the team’s poor performances and results.
It would not be a surprise if David Sullivan reevaluated Potter’s future at the end of the season, particularly if the head coach fails to add more wins to the tally.
