JUST IN: Newcastle United announces a new imminent deal as confirmed by Eddie Howe just moments after speaking to the media this morning
Newcastle deal ‘imminent’ – Confirmed by Eddie Howe on Tuesday morning
Eddie Howe has been speaking to the media this morning, discussing all things Newcastle United as we finally return to Premier League action tomorrow.
The boss discussed Saturday’s celebrations, shared the latest on our injury situation and looked ahead to our run in, but also confirmed that a new deal is ‘imminent.’
Here’s what the boss had to say, revealing that one of the longest-serving members of the current squad is going nowhere this summer and set to sign; if he hasn’t already.
Howe confirms new deal
Eddie Howe has confirmed this morning that Fabian Schar has agreed to extend his stay at St James’ Park.
Asked about his future this morning, the boss revealed that he will sign a new contract “imminently — if he hasn’t done so already.”
Schar’s deal was set to expire this summer, leaving him open to leaving on a free transfer at the end of the 2024/25 season after almost seven years at the club.
However, news this morning confirms the Swiss centre-back is staying put, suggesting the player and club still feel he has plenty to offer at the age of 33.
Schar has made his feelings clear
Speaking to the Swiss media in November last year, Schar made it clear just how much he enjoys life on Tyneside under Eddie Howe, admitting he’d “love to stay.”
He said: “I feel really comfortable at Newcastle, I’ve been playing for years and I have a coach who relies on me. Everything is right for me. I would love to stay. The club and the coach know what they have in me,”
“Basically, things have always gone relatively quickly in recent years. The club wanted to keep me, I wanted to stay. That’s why it was never a big deal.”
There is no doubt the club will be in the market for a young, right-sided centre-back this summer, but Schar still has a huge role to play and plenty to offer, with squad depth and experience key as we prepare for a return to European football next season.
