Man Utd receive cryptic update on summer transfer target Liam Delap’s future

Ipswich Town forward Liam Delap could yet remain at Ipswich Town but has clubs lining up for his signature in the summer including Manchester United, Newcastle and Chelsea.

Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap could yet remain at Portman road, according to head coach Kieran McKenna. The young striker has been widely linked to an exit come the summer with the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Newcastle said to be queueing for his signature.

Delap is believed to have a £30million release clause in his contract should the Tractor Boys be relegated, and no shortage of suitors. The 22-year-old has enjoyed an impressive first season in the Premier League having previously completed Championship loans at Stoke City, Preston North End and Hull City.

After making a £20m move from Manchester City, Delap has netted 12 goals despite Ipswich’s struggles this term. That is four more goals than any Manchester United play in the division in 2024/25.

McKenna has not given up on having Delap at his disposal next season and noted the forward’s lack of experience leading the forward line at the highest level. The ex-United coach has conceded that he believes Delap will find success at the biggest clubs in the world.

“I don’t know who it would be accepted by, because that’s not by myself or Ipswich,” said McKenna per East Anglian Daily Times. “Liam’s focus is still here and finishing the season as strong as possible.

“As I’ve said before, I think there’s certainly a possibility that he’s an Ipswich player next year. I don’t think anything’s decided in anyone’s mind.

“But can Liam play for the biggest clubs in the country, the biggest clubs in the world? He certainly can. I fully believe that. He’s already shown the impact he can have at Premier League level in a team that have really been fighting for everything.

“I think he can have an outstanding impact at this level. But he’s also very young and he’s playing his first season of Premier League football. He’s not played a huge amount of minutes as a leading striker in a team before and he’s still learning and getting better all the time.

“What’s right for Liam? What’s right for Ipswich? All those factors will come into play in the summer and the right decision will be made. But he’s happy and he’s developing really well here. He has the potential. I think he will, in his career, go on to do some really, really good things.”

Ruben Amorim is looking to replenish his forward line this summer with hopes of signing Delap. The Red Devils are also looking to land Matheus Cunha at the earliest opportunity.

United appear set to trigger the Brazilian’s £62.5m release clause. Cunha has netted 16 goals and provided four assists in 31 games this season and has been instrumental to Wolves avoiding relegation.
