Newcastle United player ratings vs Ipswich as Kieran Trippier and Will Osula excellent but 8/10 star will be gutted
Newcastle United got back to winning ways by defeating Ipswich Town 3-0 in a feisty encounter on Saturday.
Eddie Howe was back in the dug-out after recovering from illness and he was treated to a surprisingly aggressive and competitive match as Newcastle United took on the now-relegated Ipswich Town.
The Tractor Boys managed to frustrate a dominant Newcastle but lost their way when Ben Johnson was sent off for two yellows within 39 minutes.
Alexander Isak squandered several good chances but finally put his side in the lead after Jacob Murphy won a penalty.
Newcastle didn’t have to wait as long for the second as Dan Burn nodded in at the back post. Will Osula then got on the score sheet with a powerful header.
Here’s how the players rated.
Nick Pope – 7
Quick off his line when Ipswich broke forward but had no saves to make.
Kieran Trippier – 9
Was beaten once or twice by the quick Jack Clarke but this was otherwise a return to form for Kieran Trippier. He was particularly good going forward and delivered several threatening crosses into the box. One finally led to a goal when Burn nodded in a perfect cross and he picked up another assist with a great corner for Osula.
Fabian Schar – 7
A bit loose at times with Liam Delap proving to be a handful full but mostly kept the visitors at bay.
Dan Burn – 8
An early wayward pass gave Ipswich a great chance to score and he was booked for needlessly tussling with Delap at an attacking corner. Made amends for his ropey start by nodding in the second that killed the game.
Tino Livramento – 8
Continues to shine at left-back and, like Trippier, supported the attack throughout with overlaps and teasing balls into the area.
Bruno Guimaraes – 9
Back to his best after a poor display against Aston Villa. Bruno Guimaraes was everywhere across the field as he relished a game against a combative side. Had a goal very harshly ruled out when the goalkeeper ran into him and fell over and an overhead kick cleared off the line. Some fantastic slide passing to play in the forwards.
Sandro Tonali – 8
Sandro Tonali physically dominated Ipswich and did so well time and again in snuffing out their forwards as they tried to break into the attacking half. Some incisive passing and hit the bar with a pearler.
Joe Willock – 8
In for the injured Joelinton and looked a little rattled early on due to Sam Morsy’s obvious target job. But Joe Willock won the battle to put in an energetic attacking performance. Unlucky to be withdrawn so early in a rare start.
Jacob Murphy – 7
Got in behind the Ipswich back line repeatedly and that’s exactly how he won the penalty to get the Magpies in front. Not his most productive match and taken off with 25 minutes to go.
Alexander Isak – 7.5
Just like in the demolition of Crystal Palace, Isak missed several chances before finally finding the back of the net.
Yet, kept his cool when it mattered and it was his wonderful piece of skill that earned Johnson his second yellow card.
Harvey Barnes – 7
Another exciting performance on the left flank that should keep Anthony Gordon on the bench. Harvey Barnes was skilful and dangerous but his run of scoring or assisting has ended.

Moved the ball around.
Callum Wilson – 6
Didn’t see much of the ball.
Will Osula – 8
Scored his first league goal for the club with a towering header moments after coming on. A moment he loved. Lively.
Sven Botman – 6
Returned from injury to a rousing cheer.
