Arsenal legend Ian Wright expressed his delight after Martin Odegaard opened the scoring against Luton Town in the Premier League on Wednesday night.
Gunners manager Mikel Arteta made five changes to the starting line-up against the Hatters with the likes of Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Jakub Kiwior given a breather.
The club lacked the cutting edge during the early stages of the game, but they eventually broke the deadlock through Odegaard in the 24th minute.
Emile Smith Rowe brilliantly won possession from midfielder Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu before delivering a key pass to Odegaard.
The club captain played a one-two with Kai Havertz before finding the back of the net with a low shot into the bottom left corner.
Wright was delighted by the moment at the half-time interval. He said that it was a ‘really good’ finish as the ball arrived across him.
He told Premier League productions: “Luton were doing okay to keep themselves in the game but this is what Arsenal should have been doing anyway – putting them under pressure. It was a really good finish, it was coming across him. They needed that goal to calm them down.”
The Gunners eventually won the game by a 2-0 scoreline. Smith Rowe played his part with a pass which led to Daiki Hashioka’s own goal.
Smith Rowe was adjudged the man of the match for his contributions, but Odegaard was equally impressive against the Hatters.
The Norwegian star had 77 touches with 58 out of his 65 passes completed. He created two key chances while completing his long balls.
Odegaard has now registered 17 goal contributions this season with 13 of them in the top-flight.
41 per cent of his goal involvements have come since February. The fans will be hoping that the skipper can continue to lead by example.
