Bryan Mbeumo’s goal for Brentford in their draw against Wolves should not have been allowed, according to Keith Hackett.
The former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA official exclusively told Football Insider that the Cameroonian’s goal should have been ruled out as it was “illegal”.
Thanks to Brentford’s 3-2 defeat to Fulham, the Bees found themselves out of contention for European football heading into the final day of the Premier League season.
It has been a brilliant campaign for Tottenham-linked Thomas Frank‘s side, and they were looking to go out on a high.
Man United transfer target Mbeumo opened the lead for Brentford, but a stunning Marshall Munetsi strike late on spoiled the party, giving Wolves a well-deserved point.
But having re-analysed the footage, Hackett has cast doubts on the validity of the Bees’ opening goal.
Bryan Mbeumo fouls Rayan Ait-Nouri in build up to Brentford opener
As Wolves looked to start a quick counter-attack, Matheus Cunha laid the ball back towards Rayan Ait-Nouri.
The Algerian defender attempted to spin around and protect the ball, before he was clattered to the ground by Mbeumo.
Brentford made the most of the turnover in possession, playing a series of neat passes before the ball landed in the path of the Cameroonian forward, who smashed home his 20th league goal of the season.
However, replays showed Mbeumo had slammed Ait-Nouri over, and was perhaps fortunate to avoid a foul being called.
Bryan Mbeumo made ‘illegal contact’ with Ait-Nouri
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-PGMOL chief Hackett explained why Brentford’s opening goal should not have stood.
He said: “I thought that was illegal contact.
“He’s not gone in with a shoulder, he’s gone in with his backside.
“[It is a] sideways movement, and he’s achieved what he’s set out to do, and that’s to wipe out the player.
“I think that should have been a free kick with the goal ruled out.”
