Nathaniel Mendez-Laing has departed Pride Park to reunite with former Rams boss Paul Warne at MK Dons
Nathaniel Mendez-Laing brought an end to a three-year spell at Derby County on Tuesday, shocking supporters by dropping two divisions – but it turns out that wasn’t the only surprising detail of the move.
The 33-year-old winger made the decision to reunite with former Rams boss Paul Warne at League Two side MK Dons.
Many were quick to ponder how much the club may have received as part of the deal, and whether John Eustace could invest some of it into some much-needed incomings this summer.
According to BBC Radio Derby, however, the move did not include a transfer fee – which is surprising given the player still had one year left on his contract at Pride Park.
In a post on X, they confirmed: “Derby County winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing has joined League Two side MK Dons on a permanent deal.
“It is understood there is no fee involved in the transfer.
“He links up with former head coach Paul Warne, who he played a starring role under in the Rams’ promotion back to the Championship.”
The Rams signed Mendez-Laing in the summer of 2022 on the back of their relegation from the Sky Bet Championship.
He soon became a standout player and helped the club achieve automatic promotion just two years later, scoring nine goals and assisting 16 others.
“I will always have massive respect for Derby County,” he said in a heartfelt farewell message. “It was a place where I found a home.
“I have so much respect for the fans and everybody at the club, it was a special time in my career, and I’ve played some of my best football there. I’ll forever be grateful for what the club has done for me.”
