Three players similar to Paul Mullin Wrexham could sign including star with 126 career goals

Paul Mullin has been key to Wrexham’s rise but he lost his place under Phil Parkinson in 2024/25.

Wrexham signed Paul Mullin on a free transfer from Cambridge United in the summer of 2021.

It was a major coup at the time, with the now 30-year-old having just won promotion to League One and finishing as the top goalscorer in the fourth tier.

Mullin has gone on to score over 100 goals for Wrexham, winning three Player of the Season awards and being crowned their top scorer in every campaign until 2024/25.

Phil Parkinson dropped the Liverpool-born star at the end of January, and he hasn’t featured since.

Mullin is backed to leave Wrexham this summer, despite his contract running until 2027.

Wigan Athletic have been linked with a transfer for the striker as well.

With this in mind, we have taken a look at three players the Dragons could sign who are, according to Football Transfers data, similar to Mullin.

Islam Slimani

Some Wrexham fans may be familiar with Islam Slimani from his time in the Premier League with Leicester City and Newcastle United.

Slimani played 40 matches in England’s top flight, scoring a respectable eight goals and providing six assists.

He is an incredibly well-travelled star, with experience in England, Portugal, France, Belgium, and more.

In total, the 36-year-old has scored 126 goals and assisted 48 throughout his long career.

And while his age will probably annoy some fans, it seems Parkinson is once again more than happy to try and sign 30+ players this summer, with Jonny Evans and Aaron Cresswell among a number of ageing stars already linked.

Aliou Badji

Aliou Badji began his career in Senegal before moving to Europe in 2017.

He’s since had stints in Austria, Sweden, Turkey, and France, most recently lining out for Red Star FC.

The 27-year-old is set to become a free agent at the beginning of July and could be an interesting option.

He scored seven and assisted three in Ligue 1 during 2024/25 and has played in the Europa League.

Fashion Sakala

Fashion Sakala has previously featured in the United Kingdom, lining out for Rangers on 91 occasions.

He scored 24 and assisted 15 in 91 matches for the Scottish powerhouse, largely operating up front but also as a left-winger.

Sakala is currently playing for Al-Fayha in Saudi Arabia, where he’s managed to net eight and assist six in 31 league matches in 2024/25.

His wage could be high, but Wrexham are increasing their wage budget to build for the Championship.
