Blackburn transfer latest as John Eustace targets reunion
Derby County are keen to reunite John Eustace with Andi Weimann and Danny Batth but Blackburn Rovers remain in pole position to retain their services, The Lancashire Telegraph understands.
Reports from Football League World and Derbyshire Live on Wednesday linked the Rovers pair with a move to Pride Park. Both players are out of contract this summer but have been offered extensions by Rovers.
Eustace was a key driving force in bringing the experienced pair to Ewood Park last summer and, therefore, it is no surprise to see Derby considering moves to bring them to the Midlands. The former Rovers head coach is keen to reshape his squad over the summer after narrowly avoiding relegation, as he did at Ewood Park 12 months ago.
The LT understands that the Rams’ reported interest is accurate but Rovers remain in talks with both players to keep them at the club. Valerien Ismael has made it clear that he wants both to be part of his squad for next season.
Blackburn have been in dialogue with Batth’s representatives since Easter, with a first formal offer made. That was not accepted but it’s understood both parties are working closely to find an agreement. Staying at Rovers remains Batth’s preference but there will need to be an agreement that suits everyone.
The defender is away on holiday at present and so whilst discussions are ongoing behind the scenes, nothing is finalised.
Weimann is continuing his rehabilitation at Brockhall after undergoing knee surgery. The Austrian forward has been documenting his recovery on his Instagram page and should be fit for the start of pre-season.
The 33-year-old has, of course, emotional ties to Derby having played for the club previously. He signed from Aston Villa in 2015 and made more than 80 league appearances for Derby, scoring nine goals before to Bristol City.
The LT understands that Batth and Weimann both signed on low-cost contracts last year, such was their enthusiasm to join and prove their value. Having done that in excellent debut seasons, any new deals would need to be a fairer reflection of their Championship experience and pedigree.
