Blackburn Rovers midfielder Adam Forshaw is facing five weeks out through a hamstring injury, Valerien Ismael has confirmed.
Blackburn Rovers come into their midweek clash with Oxford United determined to bounce back from another frustrating weekend. For the second time this season, a waterlogged pitch saw their game abandoned early.
Not only did Rovers lose out from a winning position again, but they also suffered a new injury concern. Midfielder Adam Forshaw was forced off minutes into the second half with what looked like a hamstring issue.
Now, speaking ahead of the Oxford United tie, Ismael has confirmed this to be the case. He told club media that Forshaw has suffered a grade two hamstring injury, leaving him out for five weeks.
“He’s got a grade two hamstring injury, so it’s five weeks that he will be out,” the Blackburn Rovers boss said. “It’s another blow for us. Every game at the minute we’re losing players. So hopefully soon we’ll get some players back.”
More injury frustration for Blackburn Rovers
Forshaw started against Wrexham, Ipswich Town and Sheffield Wednesday – three games in the space of seven days. He had not been named in one of Ismael’s XIs beforehand, only coming in due to Sondre Tronstad‘s absence
The case can be made that it was asking too much of the 34-year-old to play all three matches in quick succession. Rovers aren’t blessed with depth, but they did have other options.
Whether they put it down to misfortune or their own failings though, it marks more injury frustration for Ismael and co.
The squad has been ransacked by injuries this season, most notably in the backline. The midfield department is now looking somewhat bare though with Forshaw cast to the sidelines for an extended spell as well.
Who is Valerien Ismael left with in his Blackburn Rovers midfield?
As touched on before, Ismael does have other options in his Blackburn Rovers midfield. In Forshaw’s absence, one of Moussa Baradji or Sidnei Tavares will be favoured to take his place.
Baradji has looked bright in his substitute appearances as he builds up fitness and adjusts to Championship football. Given his own injury issues this season though, there should be caution taken in throwing him straight in.
Summer signing Tavares will be determined to take an opportunity to impress.
Youngster Kristi Montgomery is currently out, while Tronstad is on the verge of a comeback. His return could be well-timed with Forshaw’s injury but his minutes will have to be carefully managed as well.
It means that Taylor Gardner-Hickman stands a good chance of securing his place in the side further. One of Baradji or Tavares may get the chance to lock down a place alongside him too, but time will tell just who emerges as Ismael’s favoured pick.
