Gary Neville claims Tottenham win was influenced by Aston Villa’s Europa League focus
Gary Neville has suggested Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-1 victory over Aston Villa should be viewed in the context of Villa’s Europa League preparations, arguing that squad rotation and player fatigue played a decisive role in the outcome.
Villa fell to a third consecutive defeat in all competitions at Villa Park, dealing a blow to their hopes of securing a top-five Premier League finish and Champions League qualification. However, Neville believes the result does not fully reflect the balance between the two sides on the day.
Speaking after the match, Neville pointed to Villa’s demanding schedule and their upcoming European commitments as key factors behind their performance.
Unai Emery made seven changes to his starting XI following the midweek Europa League semi-final first-leg clash against Nottingham Forest, opting to rest several key players, including captain John McGinn, who was not risked due to a tight hamstring.
The heavily rotated side struggled to find rhythm early on, allowing Tottenham to take control of the game with two quick goals inside the opening 25 minutes from Conor Gallagher and Richarlison.
While Villa improved after the break, they were unable to mount a comeback, with Emi Buendía scoring a late consolation goal deep into stoppage time.
Neville argued that such wholesale changes inevitably disrupted Villa’s cohesion and intensity, making it easier for Tottenham to capitalise.
“When you make that many changes, especially with a big European game in mind, it’s always going to affect the performance,” Neville explained. “Tottenham took advantage of a side that clearly had one eye on the Europa League.”
He also highlighted the physical toll of Villa’s recent fixtures, suggesting fatigue played a major part in their slow start.
“They’ve had a tough run of games, and you could see the energy levels weren’t the same. That sharpness just wasn’t there, especially early in the match,” he added.
Despite Tottenham’s clinical start, Neville implied the result should be taken with some caution when assessing both teams.
“It’s a good win for Spurs, no doubt, but the context matters. Villa rotated heavily and were managing players for a much bigger game coming up,” he said.
The defeat leaves Aston Villa still in a strong position in the race for a top-five finish, sitting six points ahead of Bournemouth with three matches remaining. However, their immediate focus now shifts to the crucial Europa League semi-final second leg against Nottingham Forest.
Neville concluded by reiterating that Villa’s priorities may have influenced the outcome more than Tottenham’s overall superiority on the day.
“Sometimes results are shaped by what’s coming next. Villa were clearly thinking about Europe, and that had an impact on this game,” he said.
