Arsenal have been handed an intriguing boost in their pursuit of Ezri Konsa, with the Aston Villa defender reportedly open to the possibility of moving to the Emirates Stadium this summer.

However, any deal remains far from straightforward, with Villa demanding a substantial fee for one of their most important defensive players.

The Gunners have been searching for defensive reinforcements following injuries to William Saliba and Jurrien Timber. Mikel Arteta is keen to add another versatile defender to his squad, and Konsa has emerged as one of Arsenal’s leading targets.

The 28-year-old is particularly attractive because of his ability to operate both at centre-back and right-back, giving Arteta additional flexibility at the back.

Arsenal have already tested Villa’s resolve with an opening proposal believed to be worth around £30million-£35million. That offer was rejected, with Villa’s valuation understood to be close to £60million.

That represents a huge difference between the two clubs’ positions.

Villa are reluctant to lose Konsa, particularly with the England international still regarded as a key part of Unai Emery’s plans. He also has two years remaining on his current contract, strengthening the Midlands club’s negotiating position.

Despite Villa’s stance, reports suggest Konsa would be receptive to a move to Arsenal should the two clubs eventually reach an agreement.

The defender’s reported willingness to consider the transfer could therefore become an important factor in negotiations as Arsenal decide whether to return with an improved proposal.

Arsenal’s need for defensive cover has increased following the injury problems affecting Saliba and Timber, leaving Arteta with fewer senior options than he would ideally like at the beginning of the campaign.

The Premier League champions have also explored alternative targets. Bayer Leverkusen’s Jarell Quansah has emerged as another option, while Arsenal have reportedly considered other defenders should negotiations for Konsa and Quansah fail.

For now, Villa’s £60million valuation remains the biggest obstacle.

Arsenal must decide whether Konsa is worth paying almost twice what they initially offered, while Villa must determine whether they are prepared to keep the defender or cash in on another valuable asset.

With the transfer window approaching its conclusion, the situation could develop quickly.

One thing appears increasingly clear: Konsa is not opposed to the idea of Arsenal, but the Gunners will have to get much closer to Aston Villa’s asking price if they want to turn their interest into a deal.
