The fallout from Celtic’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Motherwell has now exploded into full-scale controversy after an alleged leaked VAR review clip began circulating online, with furious supporters claiming the footage exposes what they believe was blatant favouritism towards the Hoops during the title race.
Celtic secured all three points in dramatic fashion at Fir Park thanks to Kelechi Iheanacho’s 99th-minute penalty after referee John Beaton was instructed by VAR official Andrew Dallas to review a possible handball involving Motherwell winger Sam Nicholson.
The decision instantly sparked outrage across Scottish football.
Hearts boss Derek McInnes branded the call “disgusting”, while Rangers icon Kris Boyd launched into an emotional live television meltdown as he questioned how such a huge decision could be given in a title race.
Now things have escalated even further.
A video clip which supporters online are describing as a “deleted VAR review angle” has reportedly surfaced across social media, with fans claiming the footage proves the ball actually struck Nicholson’s head rather than his hand during the decisive incident.
The alleged leak has sent social media into absolute chaos, with thousands of fans accusing officials of manipulating the outcome of the game to keep Celtic’s title hopes alive heading into the final day showdown against Hearts at Celtic Park.
Many supporters were left stunned by how quickly John Beaton made his final decision at the monitor, with critics insisting the referee only viewed limited replay angles before awarding the penalty.
The controversy has only intensified after several pundits, including former Hearts striker John Robertson and ex-Celtic defender Darren O’Dea, admitted live on television that the available footage did not conclusively prove handball.
Even Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou described it as “one of the worst decisions” he had ever witnessed in football.
Fans online are now demanding answers from the SFA, with accusations of corruption and bias flooding social media throughout the night.
One furious supporter posted: “This is the moment Scottish football officially died. How can anyone trust VAR after this?”
Another wrote: “They didn’t even try to hide it anymore. The replay clearly shows it hits his head first.”
Meanwhile, Celtic supporters have defended the officials, arguing Nicholson’s arm was raised unnaturally and insisting the referee made the correct decision under pressure.
The drama has completely overshadowed what was otherwise an incredible match at Fir Park, where Celtic twice came from difficult moments to keep themselves alive in the title race.
Now, with the entire championship set to be decided on the final day, tensions across Scottish football have reached boiling point.
