The teenage player tragically passed away after collapsing during a Girls’ Academy match against Fulham FC Women at Oxford’s Horspath training ground on Saturday, sending shockwaves through the football community.
Speaking ahead of Wednesday night’s match at the Kassam Stadium, Bloomfield admitted the past few days have been incredibly difficult for everyone connected to the club.
“It’s devastatingly sad news. We are all heartbroken for Amelia’s family,” Bloomfield said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this unimaginable time.”
The Oxford boss, who appeared visibly emotional during the press conference, added that tragedies like this put football into perspective.
“As a dad myself, my heart breaks for her parents. Amelia will live in our hearts forever.”
Oxford United confirmed that a minute’s silence will be held before kick-off, with players and coaching staff wearing black armbands as a mark of respect. Supporters have also been invited to lay flowers and tributes outside the stadium before the game.
Amelia, described by coaches and teammates as a talented goalkeeper and a bright personality within the academy, had been playing in a Junior Premier League fixture when she suffered what the club called a serious medical incident. Bloomfield also revealed that he met with Amelia’s family to personally offer condolences on behalf of the club.
“We want to make sure her family and friends feel the love and support of everyone at Oxford United. They will always be part of this club.”
The entire Oxford United squad and academy teams have already held a private moment of silence at the training ground as tributes continue to pour in from clubs and supporters across the football world.
Wednesday night’s fixture will now serve as a powerful moment of remembrance, with players, staff, and fans united in honouring the life of a young footballer whose impact reached far beyond the pitch.
