Ipswich Town are looking to build for the future, and one young prospect emerging on their radar is Kian Berry.
Ipswich Town have brought Slough Town teenager Kian Berry in on trial amid interest from numerous EFL clubs, as per Football League World.
Ipswich Town are a club with big ambitions. Their immediate goal is to return to the Premier League, but ITFC want to go beyond that by becoming a mainstay in England’s top flight
To do so, the Tractor Boys have to prepare for the long-term. Their academy will be key to this, developing big assets for the future to either bring into the first-team or cash in on.
Now, as per a report from Football League World, one prospect being eyed for a potential move into the Ipswich Town academy is Slough Town talent Kian Berry.
They report that Town are one of several clubs across the Championship, League One and League Two to have set sights on the 18-year-old. The Portman Road side look to be in the strongest position though, bringing Berry in for a trial ahead of a potential offer.
Ipswich Town will be targeting clearer progression routes for academy prospects
Ipswich Town have got some big talents on their books, but they are all players recruited externally. Star men Jaden Philogene, Jack Clarke, Leif Davis and more were all signed from other clubs.
In the first-team squad, only two players were brought through the academy: Cameron Humphreys and Elkan Baggott. They have sampled senior football with ITFC football before, but both are currently struggling for matchday squad inclusions and have found their success away from Portman Road.
This is partly because of the change Town have been through over recent years. In a surge from League One to the Premier League, they couldn’t really afford to be patient and offer chances to young players; they had to sign players ready to come in and step up right away.
However, as the Tractor Boys look to become a Premier League regular in the long run, clearer paths have to be made for their developing prospects. Otherwise, sought-after talents like trialist Berry may well wish to head elsewhere.
The first-team focus at Ipswich Town
While Berry looks to impress in his Ipswich Town trial, Kieran McKenna and his first-team squad will be eager to maintain the momentum they built up prior to the international break.
Next up for ITFC is a home game against Wrexham. The hosts are unbeaten in four, but the Red Dragons are unbeaten in five as they start to find their feet in the Championship.
After a slow start, Town have risen to 7th in the table. They will hope to grow stronger over the hectic festive schedule with the promotion race there to be taken by the scruff of the neck.
A win this Saturday would see them start as they mean to go on with the New Year on the horizon.
