Brian Brobbey Shines As Sunderland Slip To Manchester City In Eight-Goal Thriller

Brian Brobbey produced a performance Sunderland supporters will not forget anytime soon, scoring a sensational hat-trick against Manchester City despite the Black Cats eventually falling to a dramatic 5-3 defeat at the Etihad Stadium.

The Dutch striker repeatedly punished City’s defence and twice brought Sunderland level before completing his hat-trick in the second half.

Unfortunately for Régis Le Bris’ side, Brobbey’s heroics were not enough to secure what would have been a stunning result against the Premier League leaders.

Instead, City survived an extraordinary afternoon of attacking football to maintain their perfect league record.

Brobbey Refuses To Give City An Easy Afternoon

Manchester City took the lead after just nine minutes when Enzo Fernández caught Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs off guard with a clever free-kick.

But Sunderland’s response was almost immediate.

Just three minutes later, Enzo Le Fée produced an excellent pass behind the City defence and Brobbey raced through before calmly lifting the ball beyond Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The visitors had shown they were not going to be intimidated.

City regained the advantage through Rayan Cherki in the 29th minute, but once again Brobbey had the answer.

Thomas Meunier found space and squared the ball across the box, allowing Brobbey to finish from close range and make it 2-2.

The match was rapidly turning into a nightmare for City’s defence.

City Strike Again

Despite Sunderland’s impressive resistance, City restored their lead shortly before half-time.

Antoine Semenyo reacted quickest during a chaotic spell inside the Sunderland penalty area and fired home to make it 3-2.

Sunderland went into the interval behind, but Brobbey had already made it clear that City were going to have to work extremely hard for the three points.

And the striker was not finished.

Semenyo added his second goal shortly after the restart to put City 4-2 ahead.

For many teams, that would have been the moment to surrender.

Sunderland simply refused.

Brobbey Completes His Hat-Trick

Just two minutes after Semenyo’s second goal, Brobbey struck again.

The Sunderland forward reacted quickest inside the penalty area and turned the ball home to complete his hat-trick.

It was a remarkable individual display.

Brobbey had now scored three times against a Manchester City side that had entered the match with a perfect Premier League record.

His hat-trick also made him Sunderland’s first Premier League player to score three goals in a match since Jermain Defoe in 2016.

But Sunderland still had one major problem.

Manchester City had Erling Haaland.

Haaland Has The Final Say

With Sunderland pushing for another equaliser, City eventually found the goal that ended the contest.

Haaland converted a Joško Gvardiol cross in the 81st minute, with VAR confirming that the striker had been onside.

The goal was particularly significant for Haaland because Sunderland had been the only Premier League opponent he had previously faced without scoring against.

That statistic disappeared on Sunday.

The Norwegian had finally found the net against all 25 Premier League opponents he has faced.

Sunderland Can Hold Their Heads High

Despite the defeat, there were plenty of positives for Le Bris.

Sunderland scored three times against one of the strongest teams in the division and repeatedly exposed weaknesses in City’s defence.

Brobbey was the obvious standout.

His three goals kept Sunderland within touching distance throughout the contest and earned him widespread praise despite finishing on the losing side.

City manager Enzo Maresca even admitted afterwards that he would have preferred a much simpler victory, saying he would rather win 1-0 than 5-3 and expressing frustration at how easily his team conceded.

For Sunderland, the result ultimately leaves them without the points.

But Brobbey’s performance could prove hugely significant.

The striker has now shown that he can cause serious problems even against the very best opposition.

And if Sunderland can get more performances like this from their new attacking star, there could be plenty more memorable afternoons ahead.

BROBBEY WAS UNSTOPPABLE! 🔥

Three goals against Manchester City, but Sunderland still leave the Etihad empty-handed.

Did Brian Brobbey deserve to be named Man of the Match despite Sunderland’s defeat? 👀
