Rangers boss Russell Martin’s future in the Ibrox hot-seat is being assessed after finding himself under increasing pressure thanks to the Gers suffering a Europa League defeat to Genk on Thursday night, GIVEMESPORT senior reporter Fabrizio Romano has revealed in his latest newsletter.
The Glasgow giants are already adrift in the race for the Scottish Premiership title, having found themselves nine points behind Old Firm rivals Celtic, and there are serious question marks over whether the hierarchy will be forced into making a managerial change to turn their season around.
Martin’s Future is Being Assessed by Ibrox Hierarchy
Martin is under serious pressure to keep his job at the Rangers helm, according to Romano, and influential figures behind the scenes are contemplating whether to relieve him of his duties. Writing in his latest newsletter sent to GMS subscribers on Friday lunchtime, the respected journalist said:
“Yes [his job is at risk]. It’s not an easy situation for him. He is under pressure, with his situation being assessed.”
Rangers were condemned to a 1-0 defeat by Belgian side Genk in the Europa League on Thursday, thanks to former Celtic striker Hyeon-gyu Oh finding the back of the net after already missing a first half spot-kick, and that resulted in supporters making renewed calls for Martin to be sacked.
The tactician, who was forced to contend with Mohamed Diomade being sent off before the interval, confirmed after the setback that he will hold discussions with chairman Andrew Cavenagh.
The Gers have fallen adrift in the Scottish Premiership title race thanks to dropping points against Motherwell, Dundee, St Mirren and Celtic since the campaign got underway, while they were also defeated by Hearts earlier this month.
Martin, who penned a three-year contract when he was handed the managerial reins during the summer, was unable to guide Rangers into the league phase of the Champions League thanks to being consigned to a thumping defeat by Club Brugge in qualifying.
GMS senior football correspondent Ben Jacobs recently revealed that former Gers chief Steven Gerrard could be tempted to head back into the Ibrox hot-seat if the opportunity arises, but a change is not currently on course to be made before travelling to Livingston for a Scottish Premiership clash on Sunday.
