Jamie Carragher has launched a blistering attack on the Premier League, accusing the league of systematically working against Liverpool after a series of controversial decisions that he claims have crossed from coincidence into “a worrying pattern.”
The former Liverpool defender and now outspoken pundit did not hold back during a heated interview that is now trending across social media, insisting that recent rulings involving Leeds United and Newcastle United show clear inconsistency that is hurting Liverpool both on and off the pitch.
Carragher’s frustration stems from two flashpoints that have dominated headlines. The first was the controversial penalty awarded to Leeds United’s Wilfried Gnonto following contact with Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté, a decision Carragher described as “unbelievable” and “a perfect example of rules being bent depending on who’s involved.”
The second issue, which pushed Carragher over the edge, is the reported Premier League approval of additional conditional payments in the potential Alexander Isak transfer from Newcastle to Liverpool—a development Carragher claims would unfairly inflate the deal and discourage Liverpool from competing on equal financial terms.
Speaking passionately, Carragher said:“First it’s Leeds United, now it’s Newcastle United. At some point you stop asking questions and start seeing a pattern. It honestly feels like the Premier League is against Liverpool.”He went on to question how similar situations are handled differently depending on the club involved.
“The Gnonto penalty? That doesn’t get given if it’s the other way around. Then suddenly Newcastle are allowed to restructure payments and add clauses that make life difficult for Liverpool? Come on. This isn’t consistency.”
Carragher stressed that his frustration is not rooted in paranoia, but in what he believes is a growing imbalance in how rules are interpreted. He argued that Liverpool are being punished for operating within strict financial discipline while other clubs appear to receive flexibility under the same regulatory framework.
The Isak situation, in particular, has ignited debate. Reports suggest Newcastle could receive additional future payments linked to appearances and achievements if Liverpool proceed with the deal—terms Carragher says would never be tolerated if the roles were reversed.
“Liverpool try to do things properly,” Carragher added.“But every time they make a move, there’s another obstacle. Meanwhile, others get help, allowances, and creative solutions. That’s not a level playing field.”
Liverpool fans have rallied behind Carragher’s comments, flooding social media with claims of bias and demanding greater transparency from the Premier League. Many supporters pointed to a growing list of VAR decisions, financial rulings, and disciplinary outcomes that they believe consistently go against their club.
