England Fans Turn on Bukayo Saka After Controversial Incident During Spain Defeat
Bukayo Saka has come under fire from England supporters on social media after an incident during the Three Lions’ dramatic 3-2 defeat to Spain at Wembley.
England suffered a painful defeat in their opening Nations League fixture, with Mikel Oyarzabal scoring the decisive goal in the 74th minute to hand Spain all three points.
Spain had taken an early lead after Marc Guehi’s mistake presented Lamine Yamal with an opportunity, but England responded through Anthony Gordon before Harry Kane put the hosts ahead.
Alex Baena later levelled the score for Spain before Oyarzabal produced the winning moment, lifting the ball over Trafford to complete Spain’s comeback.
Saka Incident Sparks Backlash
Saka started the game for England but found himself at the centre of controversy during the first half.
The Arsenal winger went to ground following a challenge from Spain winger Nico Williams and appealed for a foul.
The referee allowed play to continue despite there appearing to be contact between the two players.
However, moments later, when the ball came back towards Saka, the England star immediately got back to his feet and chased after it before eventually winning a free-kick for his side.
That sequence quickly caught the attention of England supporters watching the match.
Some fans accused Saka of going down too easily, with the incident being described on social media as an example of diving.
England Fans React
The reaction online was particularly harsh.
One supporter criticised what they described as a wider “diving culture” in English football and singled out Saka as one of its major culprits.
Another fan went even further, accusing the Arsenal winger of being a “diving cheat” and claiming that the behaviour occurs for both club and country.
Other supporters described the incident as an “embarrassment”, while another questioned why Saka appeared to stay down before suddenly getting back up when the ball returned to his vicinity.
Despite the criticism, Saka was not booked for the incident, suggesting that the referee did not deem his actions worthy of a yellow card.
The Arsenal attacker was eventually substituted in the 83rd minute after failing to register either a goal or an assist.
He finished the match with a 6.3 rating from FotMob.
England will now have to regroup after surrendering their lead against Spain, while Saka is likely to face further discussion over the controversial moment that left supporters divided.
