Former Premier League referee Mike Dean has launched a scathing critique of match officials following a controversial red card in the clash between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Sunderland, branding the decision “overly harsh” and accusing VAR of unnecessary interference.
The flashpoint came during the first half with Sunderland holding the lead. Defender Dan Ballard was involved in an aerial duel with Tolu Arokodare when replays showed the centre-back pulling a handful of his opponent’s hair. Referee Paul Tierney initially allowed play to continue but was instructed by VAR to review the incident on the pitchside monitor.
After reviewing the footage, Tierney produced a straight red card for violent conduct, reducing Sunderland to ten men and dramatically shifting the momentum of the match.
