‘He needs to move on’ – Birmingham City player must leave this summer, says reporter

Birmingham City midfielder Marc Leonard ‘needs’ to move on for more regular minutes, according to BirminghamLive reporter Alex Dicken.

Birmingham City landed the player around 12 months ago and now have a decision to make regarding his immediate future. BCFC are preparing for life back in the Championship.

Leonard, 23, made 47 appearances in all competitions for the Blues last season, 35 of which came in the league. He is under contract until 2028.

Journalist Dicken has delivered his verdict on his situation, as per a report by BirminghamLive: “Tommy Doyle’s arrival is bad news for Leonard. It puts another body between him and a starting place and all but confirms that he needs to move on for regular minutes. Leonard would need an outstanding pre-season to turn things around before August 8 and convince Davies to hand him a prominent role this campaign. A loan move would be more favourable than a permanent exit for 23-year-old Leonard.”

The Blues secured the eye-catching addition of attacker Kyogo Furuhashi over the weekend. The former Celtic man, who is a Japan international, has linked up with them from Celtic and will be eager to show what he is all about in England.

Birmingham City signed Leonard to bolster their midfield ranks. BCFC will be weighing up what is best for him over the next couple of months.

He isn’t guaranteed regular minutes and doesn’t start often. As Dicken alluded to, Tommy Doyle’s arrival from Wolves will push him further down the pecking order.

Leonard, who is a former Scotland youth international, was snapped up by Brighton and Hove Albion as a youngster in 2018. Prior to his move to England, he had spells at Rangers and Hearts.

He went on to play two first-team games for the Seagulls. The Glasgow-born man was also loaned out twice to Northampton Town to get some experience under his belt.
