Ipswich Town reached verbal agreement to secure the signing of experienced Premier League Star- Sky Sports

Ipswich Town are keen on signing Fulham midfielder Sasa Lukic, the East Anglian Daily Times and Ipswich Star understand, as the newly-promoted Premier League side continue to strengthen Gary O’Neill’s squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

As first reported by Sky Sports, the 29-year-old Serbia international is among a number of midfielders being considered by the Blues during the summer transfer window. Ipswich’s recruitment team are understood to be carefully assessing several experienced options as they look to add quality and depth to the heart of midfield.

Following their return to the Premier League, Town are determined to build a squad capable of competing at the highest level, with Premier League experience viewed as a key requirement for their next midfield addition.

Lukic fits that profile perfectly. Since joining Fulham from Torino in January 2023, he has established himself as a dependable performer in England’s top flight, making close to 100 Premier League appearances and scoring twice. Comfortable as both a holding midfielder and a box-to-box operator, the Serbian is recognised for his composure on the ball, tactical intelligence, and ability to break up opposition attacks.

The midfielder is entering the final year of his contract at Craven Cottage, although Fulham retain the option to extend his stay by a further 12 months. That contractual situation could make him an attractive target if Ipswich decide to step up their interest in the coming weeks.

Lukic began his career at Serbian giants Partizan Belgrade, where he progressed through the academy before earning a move to Italian side Torino in 2016. During his seven-year spell in Serie A, he developed into one of the club’s most reliable midfielders and captained the side on several occasions before making the switch to Fulham.

At Craven Cottage, Lukic became an important figure under Marco Silva. Despite strong competition for places, he featured regularly last season, making 26 Premier League appearances, including 20 starts, as Fulham secured another comfortable top-flight finish. His consistency, work rate and experience have made him a valued member of the squad.

Ipswich already have an established line of communication with Fulham following last week’s signing of Moroccan centre-back Issa Diop. That existing relationship between the two clubs could prove beneficial should Town decide to formalise their interest in Lukic.

Fulham, meanwhile, are preparing for a new era under recently-appointed head coach Alvaro Arbeloa. The Spaniard is expected to assess his squad during pre-season before making final decisions on potential departures and arrivals, meaning Lukic’s future may depend on the club’s transfer strategy over the coming weeks.

Town’s pursuit of Lukic comes after they missed out on Japanese international Hidemasa Morita. The Blues had held discussions over signing the experienced midfielder following his departure from Sporting CP on a free transfer. However, it is understood that concerns arising during his medical examination ultimately brought negotiations to an end, with Morita instead completing a move to Hull City.

With the Morita deal no longer an option, Ipswich have intensified their search for an experienced central midfielder, and Lukic has emerged as one of the standout candidates. While no agreement has yet been reached, the Serbian international remains firmly on the club’s shortlist as the Blues continue working to strengthen their squad before the new Premier League season gets underway.
